Avant-propos et table des matières en tête de volume. Médecin, anthropologue et criminologue, Étienne-Émile Adolphe Dortel (1858-1909) s'oppose ici ouvertement au grand criminologue de l'époque Cesare Lombroso en affirmant que "le criminel-né n'existe pas". Le livre est un essai polémique pointant le caractère non conclusif des études anthropométriques de Lombroso sur des criminels. Si Dortel admet quelques concessions, par exemple que "la hauteur de la face est plus importante chez les criminels", il s'intéresse beaucoup plus aux facteurs psychologiques du crime et aux motivations des déviants : "Ce qui domine peut-être dans le criminel c'est la vanité, une vanité absurde, démesurée. Ils tirent vanité de tout, de leur courage, de leur beauté, de leur vigueur, de leurs amours, de leurs richesses, de leurs exploits, de leurs condamnations. La conséquence de ce sentiment c'est d'abord une inclination à la vengeance pour les causes les plus futiles ; ensuite une cruauté que rien n'apaise. Quand ils ont une fois goûté cet horrible plaisir de faire couler le sang, tuer devient un besoin impérieux." (p. 46)

Very scarce. <br/><br/>Attracted by the ideals of the "Declaration of Independence" Fanny Wright traveled extensively through the U.S.A. tracking how those ideals were being realized. In France who became almost like a daughter to Gen. Lafayette. She and her sister returned to America and with Lafayette were guests of Jefferson at Monticello. Later as a U.S. citizen she founded the Nashoba commune in Tennessee in anticipation of emancipation. She visited New York and Philadelphia West Point Niagara Falls Lake Errie and on to Lower Canada Montreal Lake Champlain Burlington Vermont Washington D.C. to Virginia with many observations along the way. This edition has a dedication to Lafayette by the translator who also supplied a new translation. Vol. 1 ends with remarks upon Morris Birkbeck's letters about the Illinois country. All in all Fanny Wright became one of the most remarkable women of the first half of the 19th century: among other accomplishments being the first woman to write this work the first travelogue by a woman. Non paginé. Seul le frontispice et la dernière page (représentant un plan de Jackson Park), collées aux contreplats, adhèrent à la reliure, le reste du bloc de feuilles en est détaché. Il forme une frise à déplier pour consulter les nombreuses gravures de pavillons et constructions, affichées avec leur nom et leur coût en dollars de l'époque. It forms a frieze that can be unfolded to view the numerous engravings of pavilions and buildings, displayed with their names and costs. The last two pages of the block are loose.

Original green cloth with illustration of the authors on the front board. Minor insect damage to front board spine slightly toned some foxing to endpapers else quite sound and clean. The American husband and wife team were wealthy zealous and energetic explorers who together made many expeditions to the Himalayas. Fanny a suffragist as well as a bit of a publicity hound made sure the world knew of her achievements as a pioneering female climber. Among other achievements she held the women's altitude record for 28 years after her conquest of 23000-ft Pinnacle Peak in 1906. Robinson Wayward Women amusingly describes her as having "practically battered the Karakorams into submission first treading them over with her squat hob-nailed figure and then pinning them down on virgin maps and charts to take home for the various Geographical Societies of England and America to fight over." This is the account of their first Himalayan expedition 1898-99 during which they reached the Karakoram Pass and explored the Biafo Glacier Neate W124. Cassell and Company hardcover books
