"Célèbre pour ses travaux pionniers en statistique et en probabilités, pour son analyse des modes de scrutin, le vote Condorcet, « théorème du jury » et le paradoxe de Condorcet, ainsi que pour ses écrits philosophiques et son action politique, notamment contre l'esclavage et pour l'égalité des sexes, tant avant la Révolution que sous celle-ci. Siégeant parmi les girondins, il propose la refondation du système éducatif ainsi que celle du droit pénal." (Wikipédia) Grand ami de d'Alembert, puis de Voltaire, il finit par se mettre la Convention révolutionnaire à dos et mourut dans des circonstances mal connues sous la Terreur alors qu'il était au cachot. Quelques rousseurs à travers les volumes, très petits trous de ver à certains sans perte au texte, frontispice bien présent, petits manques au cuir en coiffe et queue de certains volumes, cuir du dos du vol. XII en bonne partie manquant. Bon état général. Complet hors le volume X manquant.

L'auteur, représentant de la Confédération argentine au Congrès international des sciences géographiques de 1875, tente dans cet ouvrage de répondre à la question des causes de l'émigration et de la fondation de colonies ainsi qu'à celle des systèmes de colonisation les plus avantageux. "L'histoire du monde est traversée par un vaste mouvement de migration humaine, presque ininterrompu depuis les âges les plus reculés jusqu'à nos temps modernes où, loin de se ralentir, il semble avoir pris une intensité nouvelle à l'aide des conquêtes de l'intelligence que l'homme a faite sur les éléments qui l'entourent... les événements, les circonstances se modifient, mais la nature de l'homme ne change pas. Il forme une frise à déplier pour consulter les nombreuses gravures de pavillons et constructions, affichées avec leur nom et leur coût en dollars de l'époque. It forms a frieze that can be unfolded to view the numerous engravings of pavilions and buildings, displayed with their names and costs. The last two pages of the block are loose.

Very scarce. <br/><br/>Attracted by the ideals of the "Declaration of Independence" Fanny Wright traveled extensively through the U.S.A. tracking how those ideals were being realized. In France who became almost like a daughter to Gen. Lafayette. She and her sister returned to America and with Lafayette were guests of Jefferson at Monticello. Later as a U.S. citizen she founded the Nashoba commune in Tennessee in anticipation of emancipation. She visited New York and Philadelphia West Point Niagara Falls Lake Errie and on to Lower Canada Montreal Lake Champlain Burlington Vermont Washington D.C. to Virginia with many observations along the way. This edition has a dedication to Lafayette by the translator who also supplied a new translation. Vol. 1 ends with remarks upon Morris Birkbeck's letters about the Illinois country. All in all Fanny Wright became one of the most remarkable women of the first half of the 19th century: among other accomplishments being the first woman to write this work the first travelogue by a woman. Burgundy leather fine binding with 2 thick gilt frames and large diagonal gilt title on the front cover gilt frames on the back cover. gilt lines on the cover edges and tiny little gilt flowers on the inner turn-ins. 5 raised bands to the spine with gilt title in the second compartment and gilt flower motifs and corner pieces in the other compartments. All pages edged with thick bright gilt. On thick cream paper the texts are printed in a red border on each page with titles at the head of each page in large ornate font and vignettes and red initial capitals at the start of each chapter. Condition near fine front hinge repaired else fine contents very clean a very attractive book. I could not find another copy of this book for sale at this time nor much information about the author J.M.S. Brooke though there is this copy of a letter he wrote to the editor of The Times in 1888 "Sir -- Paying my daily visit to my church this afternoon I was surprised to find the caretaker in a semi-stupified state. Asking her what was the matter she told me that a man had just entered the church and finding her all alone inquired whether I was in the vestry. On receiving a reply in the negative he said "I see you are alone" and immediately took out a pocket-handkerchief and dashed it in her face. The strong smell of whatever liquid it had been steeped in dazed and stupefied her and she for a moment or two lost her consciousness. The noise of some of the workmen on the roof seemed to have alarmed this scoundrel and he bolted out of the church. This incident Sir perhaps might afford a clue. At any rate it will warn solitary women who are in charge of churches. I am Sir your obedient servant J. M. S. BROOKE.
