CNJL1250Octon: Verdigris Press 2003. Limited Edition. Folio in a case. Fine. Rothchild Judith. Number 10 of 50 copies quarto size 20 pp. signed by Judith Rothchild and the printer Mark Lintott. Wallace Stevens 1879-1955 was "one of America's most respected poets. He was a master stylist employing an extraordinary vocabulary and a rigorous precision in crafting his poems. But he was also a philosopher of aesthetics vigorously exploring the notion of poetry as the supreme fusion of the creative imagination and objective reality." N.B. from the web site of the Poetry Foundation.

"Study of Two Pears" was first published in 1954 in The Collected Poems of Wallace Stevens and is here translated into French by Bernard Noel. The title asserts itself as being concerned with visual arts and each stanza tugs at the tension between reality that is observed and imaginative reality the observer sees the pears but not as he wills language fails to adequately describe them as they are without the use of metaphor. There might be no more appropriate poem to illustrate than this as the speaker's desire to describe the pears without relating them to anything else is an act of reduction which ultimately expands the image by showing us the many things they do resemble.

Illustrated by Rothchild's velvety hyper-realistic mezzotints which follow the progress of the stanzas each print gradually growing brighter the pears illustrated from every possible angle becoming more definite and resolved along with the poem.

___DESCRIPTION: Original wrappers screen-printed with a design of green brown and orange with the title letterpress printed to the backstrip and upper wrapper in dark green loose leporello deckled fore-edge nine mezzotints two blind-stamped sets of pears to fly-leaves text in English and French; handset type Hahnemuhle paper quarto size 11" by 11.75" unpaginated with 20 pp. limited edition this number 10 of 50 copies signed by printer Mark Lintott and Judith Rothchild. 193486275London: Herbert Jenkins 1934. First edition. Hardcover. Minor mottling to lower cover but overall a fine copy; jacket in excellent condition benefitting from some professional restoration to the lower panel. Very good. Jacket artwork by Vernon Soper. First edition. 8vo. Original orange cloth. Dust-jacket priced 7/6. A great example of this scarce title that blends murder-mystery with weird fiction revolving around the supernatural influences of a book bound in human skin. The female author preferred male pen-names in this case Noel but having also penned the bizarre horror title The New Race of Devils published in 1921 under the name 'John Bernard' which given her penchant for wearing men's clothing would have come as little surprise to those who knew her - a group which included fellow Irish writer Samuel Beckett who became friends with her during his time in Roussillon. Miss Beamish even served as inspiration for the character 'old Mrs McGlome' in his 1958 one-man play Krapp's Last Tape. Herbert Jenkins hardcover

Romani was considered the finest Italian librettist between Metastasio and Boito. At the University of Genoa he translated French literature and with a colleague prepared a six-volume dictionary of mythology and antiquities including the history of the Celts in Italy. Romani's expertise in French and antiquity is reflected in the libretti he wrote; the majority are based on French literature and many such as Norma use mythological sources.
This volumetric work not only details the mythology of Ancient Greece and Rome but all know cultures in the world at the time between 1809-1825 spanning all continents from Okee from North American Powhatan lore to the lore of the First Emperor of China to Mitra.

This is an oversized or heavy book that requires additional postage for international delivery outside of Canada and the US. Finden's Byron Beauties is illustrated with 39 engraved plates. In very good condition. A unique example of this important set in the Byron canon. It was William and Edward Finden's illustrations to Byron that substantially enhanced the status of their work. Following his death in Greece in 1824 their engravings sensitively conveyed to a wide contemporary audience images of Byron's life and work. Finden's Landscape Illustrations to the Life and Works of Byron finally appeared in fourteen monthly parts with both Murray's and Tilt's names on the paper wrappers from January 1832. The Illustrations created a great sensation and led to further projects to engrave the life and works of other poets" ODNB. John Murray unknown

Quarter morocco and paper over boards gilt decorations on spine. The binding is lightly rubbed and worn at the tips. A very good copy. N.P. Lerebours is most noted for his publications EXCURSIONS DAGUERRIENNES 1841-1844 the first large-scaled publication illustrated from photographs as well as for his manufacture of apparatuses of which he was among the first. In his TREATISE he discusses the underlying theory of the photographic process and the numerous practical methodologies of the day. Even though it is largely concerned with the daguerreotype there are sections on the paper processes of Talbot Ponton and Bayard and a description of the galvanographic process to make prints from daguerreotypes with a compilation of writings by the inventors or practitioners themselves the list of which reads as a European directory of the most famous of the period and the gravure process of Fizeau. Although stated as the fifth edition it should be referred to as the fifth enlarged and revised edition; his earlier publications had various other titles and were less than half the length of this work. The appended catalogue p. 269 -288 lists all manner of photographic apparatus and is priced. There are several pages concerned with his publication EXCURSIONS DAGUERRIENNES and the various contents that could be ordered.

"French daguerreotypists achieved wide reputation especially daguerreotypists Lerebours and Secretan opticians to the observatory and to the navy in Paris. Before the end of 1839 N.P. Lerebours had constructed large daguerreotype cameras which produced pictures of 12 x 15 French inches. He worked at first with Gaudin then established himself in Paris as a manufacturer of optical physical and mathematical instruments . and later associated himself with Secretan. Their studio was opened about 1845 and it flourished for several years. In 1850 Lerebours and Secretan made one of the most excellent panoramic daguerreotypes of a view of Paris ever made."
