Paris: E. Tross 1855. Two important catalogues attractively bound together. Each priced throughout in a contemporary hand. I. The sale catalogue of the first library formed by La Bédoyère 1782-1861 one of the best-known French book collectors of the 19th century. The son of one of Napoleon's generals La Bédoyère was a high officer in the Gardes du Corps of Louis XVIII and Charles X and chevalier of Saint-Louis and of the Légion d'honneur. Known as one of the most discerning and rigorous collectors he envisioned forming a library of the best early and modern editions in the most splendid examples. He bought from the leading dealers and made important acquisitions at the sale of Caillard in 1810 and the sales of d'Ourches and Firmin Didot in 1811. When buying modern luxury books he often bought five or six copies printed on the finest paper and selected the best leaves from each to form one "extra" superior copy. He sought with great ardor copies of proofs before letters and the original watercolors and drawings which he bound in the most sumptuous style. "Très-belle bibliothèque formée par un amateur plein de zèle et très-difficile. Les reliures de Du Seuil de Padeloup de Derome sont nombreuses ainsique les ouvrages non rognés."-Gustave Brunet Dictionnaire de Bibliologie Catholique col. 476. The sale of 1750 lots produced the large sum of 108753 fr. Immediately after this sale La Bédoyère started collecting again and the second library was sold in 1862 after his death. This copy lacks the index. II. Veinant d. 1859 formed one of the finest private libraries in Paris of the period. An extremely active collector from his earliest days Veinant knew all the dealers and fellow collectors and frequented the sales rooms. He had the reputation of being extremely difficult and at the same time being one of the most knowledgeable of bibliophiles. Fine copies. ❧ I. Guigard II pp. 269-70-this sale "passait pour l'une des plus riches de son époque tant par le choix le nombre et la variété des sujets que par le luxe de l'ornementation et de la reliure." II. 1833130405London: John Murray 1833-1834; 1836. First edition in book form of Finden's celebrated illustrated edition of Byron's works; uniformly bound with a first edition of Finden's Byron Beauties. Octavo four volumes bound in full pebbled calf with gilt titles and tooling to the spine elaborate gilt ruling to the front and rear panels all edges gilt. Finden's Landscape & Portrait Illustrations to the Life and Works of Lord Byron is illustrated with 129 engraved plates including illustrated title pages. Finden's Byron Beauties is illustrated with 39 engraved plates. In very good condition. A unique example of this important set in the Byron canon. It was William and Edward Finden's illustrations to Byron that substantially enhanced the status of their work. Following his death in Greece in 1824 their engravings sensitively conveyed to a wide contemporary audience images of Byron's life and work. Finden's Landscape Illustrations to the Life and Works of Byron finally appeared in fourteen monthly parts with both Murray's and Tilt's names on the paper wrappers from January 1832. The Illustrations created a great sensation and led to further projects to engrave the life and works of other poets" ODNB. John Murray unknown

Quarter morocco and paper over boards gilt decorations on spine. The binding is lightly rubbed and worn at the tips. A very good copy. N.P. Lerebours is most noted for his publications EXCURSIONS DAGUERRIENNES 1841-1844 the first large-scaled publication illustrated from photographs as well as for his manufacture of apparatuses of which he was among the first. In his TREATISE he discusses the underlying theory of the photographic process and the numerous practical methodologies of the day. Even though it is largely concerned with the daguerreotype there are sections on the paper processes of Talbot Ponton and Bayard and a description of the galvanographic process to make prints from daguerreotypes with a compilation of writings by the inventors or practitioners themselves the list of which reads as a European directory of the most famous of the period and the gravure process of Fizeau. Although stated as the fifth edition it should be referred to as the fifth enlarged and revised edition; his earlier publications had various other titles and were less than half the length of this work. The appended catalogue p. 269 -288 lists all manner of photographic apparatus and is priced. There are several pages concerned with his publication EXCURSIONS DAGUERRIENNES and the various contents that could be ordered.

"French daguerreotypists achieved wide reputation especially daguerreotypists Lerebours and Secretan opticians to the observatory and to the navy in Paris. Before the end of 1839 N.P. Lerebours had constructed large daguerreotype cameras which produced pictures of 12 x 15 French inches. He worked at first with Gaudin then established himself in Paris as a manufacturer of optical physical and mathematical instruments . and later associated himself with Secretan. Their studio was opened about 1845 and it flourished for several years. In 1850 Lerebours and Secretan made one of the most excellent panoramic daguerreotypes of a view of Paris ever made." A valuable set. Sm. 4to.25 cm. Noel Alexandre or Alexander Natalis 1639-1724 was a French historian and theologian of the Order of St. Dominic who studied philosophy and theology in the convent of Saint Jacques Paris where he taught for twelve years obtained the licentiate from the Sorbonne and in 1675 the doctorate and was urged to write a complete history of the church the first volume appearing in 1677. “His directness and conciseness his critical acumen and his manner of viewing history and dividing it into special studies then quite original although now common enough won for him the approbation of the learned. The first volumes of the history brought him letters of commendation and praise from Pope Innocent XI and many cardinals but later volumes gave offense at Rome because of the author's Gallicism and Innocent XI finally forbade the faithful to read .it" Cath.Ency. Alexandre corrected the work in the third edition. Constantino Roncaglia brought out a sixth edition unaltered but with the addition of paragraphs and dissertations correcting the most offensive statements. The work was thus removed from the Index by Pope Benedict XIII. The edition offered here is the best and most complete edited by Giovan Domenico Mansi who added many explanatory notes. An anonymous writer in two supplementary volumes also included here carried the history into the eighteenth century and added various dissertations from other historians. The work thus completed appeared at Venice in 1778 in eleven folio volumes and at Bingen 1785-91 in twenty volumes. Brunet I 169. G. C. Voigt hardcover
1925W1914New York: Unpublished 1925. Original photograph by the Australian-American photographer Anton Bruehl 1900-1982. A vintage circa 1925 gelatin silver print mounted on cardstock. 7 1/2 inches by 5 1/2 inches. The photograph is unsigned but the composition of the still-life photo clearly is Bruehl's. From the same collection we have a signed photo that matches the size backing and printing of this one. In 1919 the Australian born Bruehl along with his brother and parents emigrated to the United States where he worked for Western Electric as an electrical engineer until an exhibition of Clarence H. White's photographs persuaded him to change professions. In 1924 he enrolled in White's photography school and by the next year was hired to teach in the school. In a 1976 article for Image magazine landscape photographer Joe Deal observed that "Anton Bruehl's background in engineering and love of machine forms in combination with his training under Clarence White resulted in still life photographs which give the satisfaction of well-resolved formal problems and portraits choreographed with the rhythm and movement characteristic of the age." The early photograph offered here already displays the combination of formalism with inventiveness that was characteristic of Breuhl's later color photographs for Vogue and Vanity Fair. It is easy to imagine that photographs like this one were responsible for Ansel Adams' observation that Bruehl's work was "entirely contrived and yet absolutely sincere." Bruehl's early black and white still-life photographs are much more scarce than his later color images and they seldom come on the market. The photograph is clean and bright with 3 crease lines that were probably made when the photo was affixed to the backing. The verso of the backing has some old glue stains. First Edition. Single Sheet. Very Good. Illus. by Anton Bruehl. 7 1/2" X 5 1/2". Photo. Unpublished
