Manfred is a supernatural closet drama described by one contemporary reviewer as Byron's "secret and unhallowed studies of Sorcery and Magic" Rutherford p. 116. Carter collaborated with Austin Osman Spare on automatic drawing and the journal Form. His book Dragon of Revelations 1932 inspired D. H. Lawrence's Apocalypse which Carter also illustrated. Quarto. His romantic operetta inscribed to the show's producer First edition presentation copy inscribed by Coward on the front free endpaper to the impresario Charles B. Cochran who produced the play's original production: "For Cockie with my gratitude and affection. My help in ages past my hope in years to come. Noël. 1929". Beginning with the revue On With the Dance 1925 Coward and Cochran collaborated on several successful productions over the next decade including This Year of Grace 1926 Private Lives 1930 and Cavalcade 1931. The original production of Bitter Sweet directed by Coward opened on 2 July 1929 at the Palace Theatre Manchester before the London premiere at His Majesty's Theatre on 18 July. Cochran's bookplate is on the front pastedown. Though unmarked as such this copy later passed into the theatre collection of Clive Hirschhorn b. 1940 the film and theatre critic for the Sunday Express for over three decades. Octavo. Katharine Cornell was one of the most respected versatile stage actresses of the early to mid 20th century moving easily from comedy to melodrama and from classics to contemporary plays. The play was written at the height of Coward's dramatic power but went unperformed in his lifetime. "By the early thirties Coward's increasingly mature work and its critical and popular success had established him as probably the most important dramatist of his day. Virginia Woolf flattered by his attentions professed to have fallen 'in love' with the playwright and his work and encouraged him to write more adventurously. The openly gay Semi-Monde 1926 and the anti-war polemic of Post-Mortem 1930 written after his brief appearance in a Singapore production of Journey's End appeared to be Coward's attempt to write up to these expectations" Philip Hoare in ODNB. Inscribed by the author in blue ink to the dedication page. Beneath the printed dedication 'For Binkie' Coward has added "With love as always / Noël". The dedicatee of the book and of this particular copy was theatre impresario Hugh "Binkie" Beaumont 1908-1973 one of the most important figures in the London theatre world during the twentieth century. He worked with just about every great dramatist and actor during in his long career perhaps most closely of all with Noël Coward. They had met in 1924 and following Coward's split with C. B. Cochran in the late 1930s Beaumont effectively became the author's manager producer and advisor for the remainder of both men's lives both died in 1973. 'Suite in Three Keys' comprises three plays each with a cast of four characters and all set in the same suite of a Swiss hotel. Coward thought of the plays as a kind of swan song and the opening run at the Queen's Theatre beginning in April 1966 were to be his final appearances on stage. 1843168902London: William Smith 1843-45. First edition splendidly illustrating the moths of the British isles in 124 hand-coloured plates. A collaboration with the leading entomologist John Westwood who contributed the insect descriptions this is one of Humphrey's most accomplished works as a naturalist illustrator. A skilled artist trained in Brussels Humphreys became interested in natural history after a tour of Italy. Upon his return he settled in London as a neighbour of a relative the landscape architect and prolific author J. C. Loudon. Humphreys wrote for a series of garden periodicals including Loudon's Gardener's Magazine. In the 1840s he published two entomological works with Westwood: British Butterflies and their Transformations 1841 and subsequently the present work on moths; both proved extremely popular. Westwood 1805-1893 was one of the first entomologists to obtain an academic position at Oxford University and he founded with Frederick William Hope the Entomological Society of London. In 1846 the name Westwoodia was given in his honour to a genus of Hymenoptera. He was himself a skilled insect illustrator contributing drawings to several publications between the 1820s and the 1840s. 2 vols large quarto 273 x 210 mm. With 124 hand-coloured plates. Contemporary purple mottled half morocco spines with gilt-ruled raised bands gilt lettering in compartments marbled sides and endpapers edges gilt. Patch of skinning on front pastedown of vol. I from removed bookplate. Spines slightly faded light wear to board edges and corners a few spots of foxing to edges extending a little into margins otherwise internally bright and clean. Garrat Noel GN Bleecker 1768-1833 was a New York City stockbroker and merchant and a founder of the New York Stock Exchange - one of 24 signers of the Buttonwood Agreement that established the Exchange. The present document is signed and dated in ink G. N. Bleecker November 1 1809 as witness to an agreement regarding sale of Lower Manhattan land formerly part of the Bleecker Farm bounded in part by Broad-Way now Broadway Leonard Street and Anthony Street now Worth Street and adjacent to the White Conduit House land to James Morris who also signs his name in ink James Morris' father was a prominent landowner who was a signer of the U.S. Declaration of Independence as a delegate to the Continental Congress from New York. He graduated Princeton University and became Aaron Burr's law partner. He held the office of High Sheriff of New York County and City by appointment from NY Governor John Jay. In protective sleeve. . Howes 194 First edition.<br /><br />Ives was born in New York City in 1828 and was a graduate of the United States Military Academy in 1852. As a Lieutenant from 1853 to 1854 he was appointed by the U.S. Army to the Topographical Engineers as assistant to Lt. A.W. Whipple in the Pacific Railroad survey along the 35th parallel. From 1857 to 1858 Ives commanded an expedition to explore up the Colorado River from its mouth. At Robinson's Landing he built then used the 54 foot paddlewheel steamboat Explorer to map and survey the river. His party included Smithsonian associate John Strong Newberry as geologist. He led his party up the Colorado to the lower end of the Grand Canyon then struck out across the desert to Fort Defiance in Colorado. Ives Reported his findings in his 1861 Report upon the Colorado river of the West. The Ives expedition produced one of the important early maps of the Grand Canyon drawn by F. W. v. Egloffstein topographer to the expedition. Ives next served as engineer and architect for the Washington National Monument from 1859 to 1860. During the American Civil War he joined the Confederate Army and served in several engineering capacities and was finally appointed aide-de-camp to President Jefferson Davis from 1863 to 1865. The 5 figures of the folding plate depict "Conrétions charnues trouvées dans la Veine-porte de personnes attaguées de maladies de peu représentes de grandeur naturelle." These are thrombi of the vena portae originally described by Balfour and Stewart. Often following tumors pancreas carcinoma liver tumors or hypercoagulability.
