Jany. 1862 "Confusions of a wasted youth"'.</i><br /><br />Known principally as an important min-Victorian painter James Noël Paton 1821-1901 also turned his had to writing poetry in his youth. <br /><br />As he notes in his dedication he felt that his writings were 'Confusions of a wasted youth' and probably decided on anonymity in case of a negative reception. <br /><br />This copy was presented to the Scottish minister William Hanna 1808–1882 who was at one time editor of The North British Review and a productive author and contributor to journals. A similarly inscribed copy with a different quote is held at UCLA this is presented to Mrs Henry Bicknell a daughter of the painter David Roberts and one imagines that Paton sent copies to both friends and possible future patrons of his paintings. <br /><br />OCLC records five copies in the UK at the BL Cambridge Leeds Aberdeen and Glasgow and three in North America all in Canada at Toronto McMaster and Memorial University Newfoundland. This edition is translated by Eva Loewe and Noel Cobb and signed by both to the colophon.Number twenty of one hundred and twenty six copies produced.With the original Spanish text and its English language translation on facing pages.With an illustrated frontispiece and matching illustration to front board of slip case.First published in 1936 the collection was long thought to have been inspired by Lorca's passion for Rafael Rodríguez Rapún a young actor and secretary of La Barraca. However new documents suggest that the actual inspiration was Juan Ramírez de Lucas a 19-year-old with whom Lorca hoped to emigrate to Mexico. The first edition of this work in two volumes. Published by Richard Bentley a significant nineteenth-century publisher known for the 'Standard Novels' series he created with Henry Colburn. The 'Standard Novel' series sought to reprint popular works that were out of print or that were yet to be made available in a format that was financially accessible to the middle classes.With the original boards. With the mark of Remnant & Edmonds bookbinders to the rear pastedown of Volume I. Very scarce.Henry Christmas was an English clergyman periodical editor and man of letters who having graduated from St John's college Cambridge went on to become librarian and secretary of Sion College in London. He was also a Fellow of the Royal Society and of the Society of Antiquaries in London. Rubbing to parts of the list of works on the pastedown of Volume II in addition to some marks and chips to the decorative paper covering the pastedowns recto of the front first free endpaper and verso of the rear first free endpaper for both volumes. Archival mark to rear pastedown of Volume II. Some cockling to front endpapers of Volume I. Hinges tender. Internally binding is strained. Pages are generally bright and clean with light toning some and the odd spot and fractional marks closed tears and chips not impacting text. leaves coming from between front first free endpaper-xii of Volume I and pp. 288-402 of Volume II resulting in some leaves starting to come away from the text block spine.
