Posthumously published collection of Farr's writings on statistics and public health. This 1976 edition has a new 12-page Introduction by Mervyn Susser and Abraham Adelstein. The 1885 original was edited for the Sanitary Institute of Great Britain by Noel A. Humphreys. There is also a biographical sketch of Farr as well as a frontispiece portrait of him. Farr was chief statistician in England's General Register Office and a pioneer in the quantitative evaluation of morbidity and mortality statistics. For example this book includes excerpts from his ENGLISH LIFE TABLE 1864 Longman & Co. describing how a calculating machine the Scheutz Engine #3 was first used to process census data and statistics related to 6.4 million deaths registered between 1838-54. This was the first time a mechanical calculator was applied to solve a health or biology question. Bound in the original green cloth lettered in shiny gold on the spine and front cover. The binder is soiled and very rubbed at the corners and hinges but still intact. The plates have light soiling/handling with a few sheets having areas of dark soil at one edge appearing to have accumulated dust/soil from exposure where they extended from the stack of plates .
