Also included in this volume is "An Evening of Visits" by "J. Fennimore Cooper Esq. sic". This volume is in very good-plus condition closed tear in front free endpaper rose cloth faded as always slight rubbing of the spine label; one cannot encounter these Philadelphia volumes from the 1830s in much better condition. Young ladies and young gentlemen are humorously categorized under their various types: including for the former Romantic Evangelical Literary Manly Hyperbolical Abstemious and others and for the latter Bashful Military Political Censorious Funny etc. While the first work was often attributed to Dickens when originally published anonymously in 1837 it was actually written by humorist Caswall in a voice very much like Dickens's; the second work first printed in 1838 is => genuine Dickens. <br>Â Â Â Â <br>Â Â Â Â American Imprints 49619. Publisher's violet cloth; front cover and spine faded to tan the former with a printed paper label somewhat chipped and front cover showing tiny spots of discoloration and pinholes in cloth. 1861143951861. Philadelphia: T.B. Peterson & Brothers n.d. 1861. Without original wrappers. First American Edition of THE UNCOMMERCIAL TRAVELER. "A Message from the Sea" was the All The Year Round Extra Christmas Number at the end of 1860; the pieces that formed THE UNCOMMERCIAL TRAVELLER so spelled in England appeared there too and were then published in book form in London in December 1860 though dated 1861. In the U.S. Harper paid to have the pieces appear in Harper's Weekly after which they conveyed the publishing rights to Peterson who published the first American edition on 2 February 1861 advertised at 50 cents. As bibliographer Walter Smith indicates Peterson was and is a bibliographer's nightmare -- as no volumes were dated and multiple printings are differentiable only by their wrappers and ads; however a general rule of thumb is that Peterson's first format was wrappers without illustrations followed by cloth with separately-inserted plates and then cloth with integral illustrations. This is a volume from Peterson's "Uniform Edition" of Dickens's works initially bound in wrappers no longer present. This volume consists of a joint title page 5 a Contents page 7 and text continuously-paginated from p. 9 through p. 169 THE UNCOMMERCIAL TRAVELER begins on p. 75. The ads printed on p. 170 actually bearing the page number "7" at the foot list other authors' books that were first published no later than 1860; this is the same ad page as appeared in Peterson's first American edition of GREAT EXPECTATIONS which was published on 27 July 1861 -- and therefore this is not the very first printing of this edition. Smith lists five copies he examined -- this copy plus four in institutional collections -- and only two of them at Kent State and at Wellesley are in wrappers but even those bear a price of 75 cents and thus are not the very first printing; Smith was unable to locate a single copy in wrappers bearing the price of 50 cents. All of this means: this is a scarce book! Except for the fact that the original wrappers are lacking this volume is in fine condition spine overlaid with archival paper. Smith pp 121-125 the "personal copy" of Note 2a is this one -- which Smith has signed in pencil; see Podeschi Yale D25. Housed in a simple paperboard folder. unknown books

American Notes is largely based on Dickens's letters to John Forster Daniel Maclise Beard Mitton and Fontblanque. He sailed from Liverpool on 3 January 1842 and visited numerous cities in the United States and Canada including Boston New York Philadelphia Richmond St. Louis Montreal and Quebec before leaving for England from New York City on June 7. It was an exhausting trip and Dickens was especially tired of the often virulent reactions to his support of international copyright laws. Original blind-stamped olive green cloth. First Separate Edition. After NICHOLAS NICKLEBY was published in monthly serial parts with separate plates in 1838-1839 Dickens decided that his future novels would be published in weekly serial parts that included the illustrations within the text -- loosely connected under the title of MASTER HUMPHREY'S CLOCK. He began this project in April 1840 with his tale THE OLD CURIOSITY SHOP; after forty-plus parts he completed that tale and swung into the beginning of BARNABY RUDGE. In November 1841 after a total of 88 weekly parts BARNABY RUDGE was complete. During this serialization MASTER HUMPHREY'S CLOCK containing both novels was also published in three volumes one at a time; after serialization in December 1841 each novel was also published separately in one volume as with BARNABY RUDGE here. This is why the pagination of BARNABY RUDGE is odd -- with the text running from page 229 to page 306 second half of Vol II of MH'sC then from page 1 to page 420 Vol III. At the conclusion of BARNABY RUDGE Dickens abandoned this weekly method of plate-less serialization and reverted to his prior method with MARTIN CHUZZLEWIT. This copy is in the binding variant noted by Smith of olive green fine-diaper cloth blind-stamped with a chain-like design running around the border's inner surface as was later used on DOMBEY AND SON. The original endpapers are peach-coated -- one of several colors to be found without known priority. The volume is in very good condition with a bit of wear at the extremities of the spine and along the lower edges. The delicate original endpapers are only slightly cracked.
