1924WRCLIT74766London: British Art Company 1924. Seven. original etchings in sepia on paper plate size 135 x 98 mm plus margins. In gilt edged sealed mats 31 X 25 cm with BAC blindstamped logo in lower mat corner. One of an unknown number of sets of these seven original etchings of Dickensian scenes each signed in the lower margin in pencil by the artist. Burn 1862-1945 is known for his paintings and etchings of maritime and architectural studies. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and Royal Society of British Artists. Each of the etchings is captioned on the mat with the building identified and they include buildings identified with EDWIN DROOD DAVID COPPERFIELD PICKWICK PAPERS THE OLD CURIOSITY SHOP as well as Dickens's birthplace etc. OCLC locates one complete set of these etchings which were originally accompanied by 4pp. of prelims at the HRC. 1837146181837. illustrative of Every-Day Life and Every-Day People. Being a Continuation of "Watkins Tottle and Other Sketches." Philadelphia: Carey Lea & Blanchard 1837. Original drab boards with rose cloth spine and printed label. First American Edition consisting of 1250 copies issued in February 1837. These are the twelve pieces that had been published in England two months earlier as "The Second Series" of SKETCHES BY BOZ. As is evident from this book's sub-title this Philadelphia firm had published the "First Series" of SKETCHES BY BOZ as WATKINS TOTTLE and Other Sketches nine months earlier. Later in 1837 Carey Lea & Blanchard reprinted this volume with the addition of "The Tuggs's at Ramsgate" and "The Pantomime of Life" under the title THE TUGGS'S AT RAMSGATE AND OTHER SKETCHES. This is a very good copy there is wear along the edges of the spine and the spine label is rubbed but wholly legible -- but this extremely fragile volume has held up very well for the past 180 years; the faint remnants of a shelf label are visible at the top of the spine and there is an old ink-stamped name at the top of the title page. Original red cloth pictorially decorated in gilt.<br/><br/> First Edition of the fourth of Dickens's five illustrated Christmas books -- following A CHRISTMAS CAROL THE CHIMES and THE CRICKET ON THE HEARTH and preceding THE HAUNTED MAN. This is an unusual tale in which two sisters love the same man both ultimately settling in with him though only one is married to him -- according to Thackeray "a wretched affair." It is in fact quite autobiographical: Dickens loved Mary Hogarth married her sister Catherine and then was happy to have his household run by their sister Georgina. This copy has the vignette title page in the fourth and usual state Todd's state E1 with an angel holding the banner and with no publisher's imprint. In our experience at least 90% and perhaps 95% of the copies encountered are of this state. This is a bright attractive copy just about fine with only the faintest hint of wear at the very tips volume slightly askew as usual. The front endpaper bears the inked inscription "Ellen F. One of 100 copies on various handmade and mould-made papers including Zerkal Ingres papers from La Papeterie St. Armand each copy signed by the printer / designer Mark McMurray on the colophon. Page size: 10-3/8 x 7-1/4 inches; 107pp. plus half-title and titlepage table of contents and colophon. Bound by Anastasia Osolin: red morocco leather spine and black paper over grey paper with title printed on grey visible through rondel cut out in black paper title stamped in grey on spine. Set in 12-point Bell cast by Michael and Winifred Bixler the complete text of the first edition of 1843 also uses 19th century metal and wood types. The images are by Guy Berard Greg Lago Melissa Schulenberg and Gregory McMurray and are accomplished in various media including pochoir collage wood engraving and relief blocks. The illustrations are numerous and unusual collages of disparate materials - always suited to the text and designed to bring life to it no matter how many times one has read the story. The wood type is used to great effect. as are the varieties of paper and variations in type size dingbats and shaping of text. In all this is a CHRISTMAS CAROL to reveal to the reader the "dark sleep-deprived angst of the original complete text" from the artist's statement. A wonderful book. Caliban Press unknown books
