After the legendary pantomime's death Dickens was invited by Richard Bentley to edit and improve Thomas Egerton Wilks's clumsily written Life of Grimaldi which had been based on the clown's own notes which Dickens did under his regular nom de plume "Boz". As a child Dickens saw Grimaldi perform at the Star Theatre Rochester in 1820. The Memoirs of Joseph Grimaldi illustrated by George Cruikshank sold well to Dickens's surprise. 1850149762London: Bradbury & Evans 1850. First edition in book form of "the most perfect of all the Dickens novels" Virginia Woolf. Octavo bound in three quarter calf over marbled boards by Henry Sotheran morocco spine label lettered in gilt elaborate gilt tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands marbled endpapers all edges marbled. Illustrated with 40 plates designed & etched on steel by Hablot K. Browne Phiz including frontispiece and additional pictorial title. In very good condition ownership inscriptions. A nice example of the first edition of one of Dickens' most enduring works. "Charles Dickens and Hablot Knight Browne are the most celebrated author-artist team in the history of English book illustration" and Copperfield was their "most popular success" Hodnett 111-12. Charles Dickens’ The Personal History of David Copperfield is a semi-autobiographical novel that explores themes of perseverance self-discovery and social mobility through the life of its protagonist David Copperfield. Often considered one of Dickens’ most personal works the novel reflects his own experiences with childhood hardship labor and the pursuit of literary success. Through a rich cast of characters including the benevolent Betsey Trotwood the villainous Uriah Heep and the tragic yet endearing Mr. Micawber Dickens examines issues of class ambition and personal integrity. The novel’s blend of realism and sentimentality combined with its first-person narrative allows for a deeply introspective and emotionally resonant exploration of personal growth. David Copperfield remains one of Dickens’ most celebrated works praised for its vivid characterizations and its insightful portrayal of 19th-century English society. Bradbury & Evans hardcover
183611223London: Chapman and Hall 1836. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. Octavo 609pp. illustrated. A very handsome copy bound from the original parts by Bayntun-Riviere in early 20th century full crushed blue morocco with top edge gilt gilt portrait of Dickens on the front board vignette of Dickens' autograph to the rear board gilt spine compartments gilt borders and dentelles and marbled endpapers. Original wrappers for all 19 parts bound in at rear with a great number of other advertisements mostly for the later parts. Mild offsetting to the front board and the spine gently faded to a paler blue though the gilt remains bright. One corner nicked. Contents remarkably bright and fresh with one repaired tear to the engraved title page. No evident foxing. Overall in very near fine condition. Mixed issue as just about always. 43 inserted illustrations including the frontispiece chiefly by Phiz. "Pickwick" is one of the most difficult Dickens books to collate and we have not endeavored to cross-reference all of the hundreds of possible issue points in Eckel and elsewhere but note that most of the wrappers are in later states per Eckel. A few examples: the first two Parts do not have "With four illustrations by Seymour" and the illustrations themselves bear the hallmarks of Phiz's minor but evident revisions to Seymour's originals though they are not signed by Phiz. Part III does have the two Buss plates. We welcome any questions on various issue points or anything else. Laid in is a small printed note from the bindery describing the materials used in the binding of this book and instructions on proper care and maintenance. Altogether a very stately handsome and clean signed binding of Dickens' first hit novel priced chiefly for the grandeur of the binding and the fresh condition of the text and plates. See Gimbel A15 Eckel pp. 25-50 for full details on various issue points. Chapman and Hall hardcover

1854154631854. London: Bradbury & Evans 1854. Original blind-stamped olive-green cloth.

First Edition of Dickens's novel sited in the grimy manufacturing city of Coketown; it is his only novel not to have scenes set in London. School superintendent Thomas Gradgrind tries hard to repress the children's imagination in favor of Facts: "Now what I want is Facts. Teach these boys and girls nothing but Facts"; his own two sons are named Adam Smith and Malthus. In HARD TIMES Dickens was satirizing this utilitarian philosophy and also publicizing the terrible working conditions of the industrial poor. HARD TIMES was not issued in monthly parts but rather appeared serially in twenty weekly numbers of Dickens's "Household Words" during 1854 Dickens wanted to give his periodical a boost and it worked; it is one of only two Dickens novels that first appeared in book form unillustrated -- the other being GREAT EXPECTATIONS. This copy is in the first of the four binding states in horizontally-ribbed olive-green moiré cloth with "Price 5/-" at the foot of the spine. This is a near-fine copy with scarcely any wear to the cloth and with the spine gilt still bright; the original pale-yellow endpapers are clean and intact. The one flaw other than the unavoidable browning of the spine is a glass-ring on the rear cover. Smith I pp 85-88; Carter MBV pp 7-8. Housed in a handsome clamshell case with leather labels. unknown
