After the success of A CHRISTMAS CAROL Dickens continued to produced "little Christmas books" in order to meet demand that swelled for the holiday season then as now the busiest time for booksellers. First published in 1845 CRICKET ON THE HEARTH is the third in the series featuring a drama of domestic happiness that picks up on themes from the Ghost of Christmas Past scene in A CHRISTMAS CAROL. This copy was bound by Chivers of Bath in the trademark style he developed that was also a landmark in the history of book design: the Vellucent binding. In this technique a painted design is protected by the addition of a layer of vellum so thin that it is translucent giving it the appearance of a delicate glass window. A striking copy of the beloved Victorian tale. 7'' x 4.5''. Contemporary tan morocco by Cedric Chivers stamped with elegant gilt ornaments central Vellucent title vignette to front board. There is internal hinge separation along the internal paper with the binding separating from the text block in some volumes. The external hinges themselves are sound.</p><p>Quality paper can be read without damage.</p><p><br /><br /></p><p>Globe Edition</p><p>Printings range from 1870 - 1872 as it took 2 years to publish the set.</p><p>Beautiful genuine leather and marble edge bindings on all volumes.</p><p>Books have wear specifically on front and rear covers however nothing unexpected for being over 150 years old.</p><p>The spines however are in excellent condition with no sunfading. No loose or missing pages.</p><p>These Globe Editions were published in various cost levels with these leather editions being perhaps the most expensive bindings offered by the publisher. This is the first edition of the third Dickens Christmas book an unrestored copy in the publishers original illustrate red cloth noteworthy both for condition and for presenting a bibliographic curiosity. <br /> <br />This copy is a possible intermediate state between the first and second states of the first edition with an apparently unrecorded variant of the publishers advertisement leaf for Oliver Twist following the text. This leaf typically denotes first or second state of the first edition. Smith II 6 identifies two states of this leaf the first with 10 lines the second with 12. This copy has 11 lines lacking the first line of the identified second state: NEW EDITION OF OLIVER TWIST but otherwise identical to the second state leaf. <br /> <br />Irrespective of state this copy is in marvelous condition. Condition approaches near fine. The elaborately gilt and blind stamped red cloth remains vividly bright as well as square and clean with only minimal shelf wear and a few trivial blemishes. Only the original pale yellow endpapers show some soiling in an odd triangular pattern as from something once laid in that left a slight impression. The contents are otherwise lovely with no spotting no previous ownership marks and only mild toning. We note a minor diagonal crease to the lower blank fore edge margin of the pp.3-4 leaf and an original printers/binders flaw imparting a minor diagonal impression to the upper blank fore edge margins of pp.145-160. The gilt edges remain bright. The binding is protected beneath a clear removable mylar cover. <br /> <br />Although the title page of The Cricket on the Hearth is postdated 1846 publication was on 20 December 1845. <br /> <br />Charles John Huffam Dickens 1812-1870 was an English writer and social critic widely viewed as the greatest novelist of the Victorian era. In October 1843 he had the sudden inspiration of writing a Christmas story intended to open its readers' hearts towards those struggling to survive on the lower rungs of the economic ladder and to encourage practical benevolence but also to warn of the terrible danger to society created by the toleration of widespread ignorance and actual want among the poor. The result written at white heat was A Christmas Carol: in Prose published by Chapman and Hall on 19 December as a handsomely bound little volume which met with marked success. The first edition sold out by Christmas Eve. By 1844 the novella had gone through 13 printings. Myriad editions as well as stage and screen adaptations continue to accumulate with no apparent slackening of pace or interest over time. <br /> <br />Christmas Carol was only the first and foremost of several Christmas-themed stories. Dickens eventually produced five Christmas books. The Carols more overtly political successor The Chimes followed in December 1844 The Cricket on the Hearth in December 1845 and The Battle of Life in December 1846. Dickenss fifth and final Christmas Book The Haunted Man was published in December 1848. <br /> <br />The Christmas books particularly The Chimes The Cricket and the Carol were the centerpiece of Dickens public reading tours in the 1850s and 60s. In The Cricket the story centers on John and Dot Peerybingle whose marriage is threatened by a wide difference in their ages. When confronted with the possibility of Dot's infidelity John consults the spirit of the Cricket on the Hearth whose chirping Dot has said brings luck. The cricket assures John that all will be well. In the end the misunderstanding is cleared up and the couple's happiness is restored. Included with this copy are 26 mounted photographs most of them signed by the actors of characters from a local production of "The Pickwick Papers" put on by the "Ipswich Suffolk England Presbyterian Acting Guild". There's also a bound-in Presentation page thanking a Mr. Herbert Walker for his 4 years of leadership and signed by the members of the Ipswich Presbyterian Guild. A clean very sharp copy to boot. Tight and VG to Near Fine with very light scuffing to the front panel mild wear at the foot of the spine and very light foxing internally though not affecting the plates at all and along the fore-edge. First edition.</p><p><em>The Mystery of Edwin Drood</em> is Charles Dickens's final unfinished novel published in 1870 which centers on the mysterious disappearance of Edwin Drood after his engagement to Rosa Bud is broken off leaving his uncle the opium-addicted choirmaster John Jasper as the prime suspect. The story set in the cathedral town of Cloisterham involves opium dens secret desires and a detective figure named Datchery but Dickens died before revealing the ending leaving the central mystery unsolved and sparking centuries of speculation.</p><p>At the death of Dickens on 9 June 1870 the novel was left unfinished in his writing desk only six of a planned twelve instalments having been written. He left no detailed plan for the remaining installments or solution to the novel's mystery and many later adaptations and continuations by other writers have attempted to complete the story.</p><p>There have been four film adaptations of <em>The Mystery of Edwin Drood</em>. The first two are silent pictures released in 1909 British directed by Arthur Gilbert and 1914 American directed by Herbert Blaché and Tom Terriss and are unavailable to the general public and have been little seen since they were released.</p><p><strong>Condition:</strong> Some wear and soiling to wrappers with some losses occasional light spotting and dampstains to text and one front joint of the box worn else very good in like enclosure.</p> Chapman & Hall paperback

As the titular Dombey builds his shipping company he fantasizes that his son will someday take over the business and continue his legacy. But England is changing rapidly due to the effects of industrialization and its effects ripple throughout Victorian culture. One symbol of industrialization's promise and its perils is the railroad. In chapter six Dickens calls the railroad's impact a "great earthquake."
