The firm failed as of January 1880 because of business dealings in Toronto. Assignments to creditors were made at that time. In March 1880 a new outfit Belford Clarke & Co. was operating as a publisher.</p><p>The firm established a New York branch which was run by Robert Belford. Financial difficulties forced the company into receivership in 1889. An agreement with creditors allowed the company to continue with the New York branch being called the Belford Company and the Chicago branch continuing as Belford Clarke & Company. Small octavo in fours 2 volumes. 224pp. 196pp. plus 16pp. of publisher's advertisements at the rear of volume II. A married set in uniform condition externally bound in the publisher's original drab boards with rose-colored muslin cloth spines and printed spine labels. Boards worn at the corners with some flaking to the spine labels rather more so on volume I. Volume I has a contemporary owner's name inked to the front paste-down and is heavily and evenly browned though reasonably crisp and sound. Volume II is slightly shaken but brighter with very little foxing. Early 20th century bookplate to the front paste-down front inner hinge notably cracked and exposed but the binder's rope holding. Overall the set in good condition. Note that the copy of volume I that originally accompanied our volume II is also included here but is in very poor condition heavily chewed at one corner. We are not considering that volume into our price though it will be included with the shipment. The rare true first American edition of this early classic by Dickens. An instant hit in England Dickens's American publisher was very eager to have a Cruikshank-illustrated edition ready for the public though these were delayed somewhat and Lea and Blanchard decided to publish this two-volume edition without illustrations. A "Publisher's Notice" opposite the title page in volume I reads as follows: "A large portion of the last part of Oliver Twist having been sent to the American publishers in manuscript they hasten to place before the public the work complete in the present form. At the same time they have to regret that the illustrations by Cruikshank were not ready to accompany the manuscript from London. On their receipt no delay will take place in laying the remainder of the illustrated edition before the public." The one-volume illustrated edition printed in two columns is often incorrectly described by dealers as the first American edition but this 2-volume edition in fact preceded it. Forced to leave school to work in a boot-blackening factory from ages 12-15 to help pay off his father's debts Dickens would take these early experiences alongside a love of reading writing and desire for fame and fortune into an immensely successful career as a novelist and journalist. <br /> <br /> "Oliver Twist" was the second novel Dickens wrote. Originally published as a serial from 1837 to 1839 in the magazine "Bentley's Miscellany". The novelization would come about first as a three-volume work under "Boz" a pseudonym Dickens used in his early works "Sketches by Boz" with origins in the mispronunciation of "Moses" as "Boses". This nickname can still be found in this first American edition "BOZ!" on the title page. <br /> <br /> "Oliver Twist" would break ground as the first Victorian era novel with a child protagonist its depictions of poverty and life as a child working in a factory and would become one of Dicken's most known stories. "Oliver Twist" was and remains a highly regarded work by critics and audiences alike. However it would come under fire in it's early printing for it's portrayal of the character of Fagin who's ethnicity is constantly referenced as "the Jew". Despite at first reacting defensively to early critiques of antisemitism Dickens would change the book so that past the first 38 chapters references to Fagin as "the Jew" were nearly nonexistent. 1388368. On a 4½" X 2½" envelope bearing a red "One Penny" stamp at upper right Dickens addresses it in bold brown ink to "Mrs. Gordon / Lixmount / Edinburgh" signing his name at lower right. Very good. Minor age toning. This item is at center in an ornate 1" wood-and-gilt frame under glass overall dimensions 12" X 22" and double beige mat. The mat opening above features a 5½" X 7" sepia-tone well-known 1858 half-length photograph of Dickens at age 46 before a table holding up a book modern reproduction and below the document is a 4" X 2" brown metal plate engraved in gilt "CHARLES DICKENS / 1812-1870." The document has been free-floated within its mat opening and both mat openings include gold fillet. Lixmount refers to Lixmount House a mansion built in a fashionable district of Edinburgh in 1793. It once housed Eliza Jenkins at one time governess of the Brontë sisters but in 1803 a Gordon family became owners and various Gordons owned and lived in it for many years -- making the specific identity of this "Mrs. Gordon" a mystery.
