Charles Dickens edited the first two volumes of the work and wrote the introduction as well as The Lamplighter's Story. Proceeds from the sale of the work went to the widow of Dickens' first publisher John Macrone who had died penniless. 3 vols octavo. The set comprises Our Mutual Friend Nicholas Nickelby Old Curiosity Shop and A Tale of Two Cities Sketches by Boz and Christmas Books Little Dorrit Oliver Twist and Hard Times Barnaby Rudge and The Uncommercial Traveller Dombey & Sons Great Expectations and American Notes David Copperfield Matin Chuzzlewit Pickwick Papers. All edges gilt and decoratie gilt and black embosed decoration to the spines and boards. Marbled end papers. All volumes contain frontispiece plates and a few other b/w illustration plates. A little rubbing to the head and tail of the spine of the volume of Barnaby Rudge Oliver Twist Pickwick Papers and Little Dorrit. A few bands on the spines are also a little rubbed as are many of the board corners -though the bindings remain very fresh clean and bright. There is a little splitting to the fornt inner hinge to the volumes David Copperfield Nicholas Nickelby and Little Dorrit and to the rear inner hinge of Little Dorrit - the boards remain firmly attached. The casing is sprung to the volumes Old Curiosity Shop Oliver Twist and Barnaby Rudge. the front board of Dombey & Sons has split from the spine revealing the underlying binding and leaving the boards slightly shaken. neat pencil name and place inscription to the preliminary blank page of Nicholas Nickleby. There is a water stain with tide mark to half of the frontispiece plate and one other illustration plate of Old Curiosity Shop though with no other signs of moisture exposure. A little foxing to the edges of the spine strip of Pickwick Papers and Nicholas Nickelby. The front end paper of Oliver Twist has become detached from the rest of the textblock several short tears and niks to the edges of the front end paper. One binding is sitting a little proud. All volumes have a little scattered foxing mainly to the fore edges and page margins with more marked foxing to the volume Dombey & Sons particulalry to the first few and last few pages including frontispiece plate and title page. Hunted Down first appeared in the New York Ledger in September 1859. It was first published in Britain in All the Year Round in two weekly issues 4 and 11 August 1860. It was first published in book form in the US by T. B. Spine just slightly sunned though hard to tell because of the heavy gilt a few trivial spots internally but A VERY FINE COPY in quite a pretty binding.<br/> <br/> This attractively bound volume of a working class poet's verse and prose represents one of Dickens' charitable efforts in the spirit of social reform. A carpenter by trade John Overs 1808-44 had become acquainted with Dickens in 1839 when he submitted poetry for publication in "Bentley's Miscellany" then under Dickens' editorship. Over the next several years Dickens became a literary mentor and something of a friend to Overs providing writing advice lending books and helping Overs to secure a position at Drury Lane Theatre when his tuberculosis became too severe to continue his work as a carpenter. Literary scholar Sheila M. Smith has suggested that Overs may have served as an influence for "The Chimes" Dickens' penultimate Christmas book; she writes that Overs "was neither a political agitator nor a trade unionist. . . yet he was bitter and exulting in the idea of social revolution. A working man of this kind goaded to such feelings would have aroused Dickens's sympathy at a period when the novelist was experiencing his most violent indignation about his country's poor." To whatever degree that sympathy proved a literary inspiration for Dickens it directly led to the publication of the present work. When it was clear by the spring of 1844 that Overs would not survive his illness Dickens suggested to him that he publish a collection of his writings to help provide for his family after his passing. And so the present anthology was published only months before Overs' death on September 28 1844 with the proceeds from the book along with an additional charitable collection taken up by the publisher allowing his widow to make a living by opening a small milliner's shop. There were numerous items produced to commemorate his life but the quality of this particular portrait makes it one of the scarcer ones especially in such very good condition. <br /><br />Much in Dickens' work could appeal to the simple and the sophisticated to the poor and to Queen Victoria no less. Technological developments as well as the qualities of his work enabled his fame to spread world-wide very quickly. His long career saw fluctuations in the reception and sales of individual novels but none of them was negligible or uncharacteristic or disregarded. Illustrated with a frontispiece engraved title page the complete forty-one original plates plus 25 additional plates bound in from Phiz - who is known for illustrating many of Dickens' works - and Robert Seymour who died whilst illustrating the work. Collated complete. Many of the plates are in first state with page numbers rather than titles. A mixed early issue of the first edition in book form. Issue points include: The sign in the title page reads 'Weller' instead of the first issue 'Veller'; five lines of footnotes to page 9; with mark between 'r' and 'u' in 'rum' in the last line of page 10 ; with the signature 'E' present to the tail of pages 25 and 27; page 261 correctly signed 'X2'; with the second '3' in the page number present to page 303; 'Picwkick' to the running title of page 375; the last 'e' of page 17 is broken; 'this friends' on page 400 line 21 and an incomplete 'F' in the word 'OF' in the headline on page 432. 1866163461London: Chapman and Hall 1866. The copy shared between his two youngest sons Association copy inscribed "H. F. Dickens and E. B. L. Dickens" by Henry Dickens on the front free endpaper of both volumes. Charles Dickens named his youngest sons Henry Fielding and Edward Bulwer Lytton after the novelists. An autograph letter from Henry responding to an enquiry about these volumes in 11 July 1907 is loosely inserted. The letter reads in part: "The two names are in my own handwriting. The volume forms one of an edition my brother and I had some volumes of which including this one I have missed for a long time past. Judging from the handwriting the signatures must have been written very many years ago. How the volumes came to leave our possession or to be sold I have not the very remotest idea". At this later point in time Henry additionally inscribed the vol. I frontispiece recto and the vol. II half-title "H. F. Dickens and E. B. L. Dickens" and then added a postscript to the letter stating "my writing does not seem to have altered very much after all". Sir Henry Fielding Dickens KC 1849-1933 was the longest-lived child of Charles Dickens and the most successful leading a distinguished career in law and serving as the Common Sergeant in the City of London. Sir Henry also served as life president of the Dickens Fellowship wrote Memoirs of My Father 1928 and raised money for the Red Cross by dressing up as Charles Dickens while reciting from his novels. Edward Bulwer Lytton Dickens 1852-1902 lived a contrasting life in the Australian outback his father providing him an agricultural education and then sending him to join his older brother Alfred in Australia in 1868. Edward later joined politics and represented Wilcannia in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly. Edward observed "Sons of great men are not usually as great as their fathers. You cannot get two Charles Dickens in one generation" Ackroyd p. 878. Even the illustrious Sir Henry was charged with failing the impossible task of living up to his father's great legacy. When a criminal he was sentencing told him "You ain't a patch on your father" Sir Henry retorted "I quite agree with you. You will now have 18 months in which to resume your studies" Recollections p. 280. This copy is a reprint from the Library Edition published in 22 volumes in 1858. Martin Chuzzlewit was first published in book form in 1844. 2 vols octavo. Engraved title page in vol. I engraved frontispieces and 37 plates by Phiz. Original red cloth spines lettered within gilt frames and decorated in blind covers panelled in blind yellow coated endpapers. Henry Dickens's inscription on vol. FIRST EDITION FROM THE ORIGINAL PARTS. Bound in a handsome antique binding. Little Dorrit was published in 19 monthly installments each two illustrations by Phiz. Each installment cost a shilling with the exception of the last a double issue which cost two shillings. It is a work of satire on the shortcomings of the government and society of the period. Much of Dickens' ire is focused upon the institutions of debtors' prisons—in which people who owed money were imprisoned unable to work until they repaid their debts.
