The set is complete in 15 volumes with all of the works of Charles Dickens.Bound in the original leather bindings.The bindings are original.Quality paper.The paper is still strong despite the age. Some light browning but higher quality than most sets.The paper is not fragile or brittle as is common in later Victorian printings.Some volumes are illustrated.Early fountain pen ink on the preliminary pages of Bleak House as shown in the pictures. Set is in very good condition overall.The leather is supple.The hinges are all sound and strongly attached.Some edge rubbing and other external wear.Some uneven spine discoloration and abrasions as shown in the pictures. Oliver Twist is noticeably darker in the shelf and the uneven spine discoloration might be bothersome.Some generalized shelf wear. Some writing. The biggest flaw might be the uneven spine discoloration which might be more bothersome in person especially Oliver Twist.Set is good to very good overall despite the age. Overall an exceptional antiquarian set of Dickens in leather.All external hinges are sound and the leather supple. Undated 15 volume leather bound set of Dickens' Works. Genuine calf leather three-quarter bindings with marbled boards. Head and tail bands gilt tops five raised bands on spines marbled endpapers. Each book has previous owner signature in pencil on blank page in the frontmatter all dated 1901. Edges are aged bindings firm. Small tear on back free endpaper of Tale of Two Cities/Sketches by Boz. Pencil annotation on back endpaper and highlighted in pencil on page 162 on Nicholas Nickleby. Small tear on back endpaper of England/Reprinted Pieces. Two light pencil marks on page 30/31 on Tale of Two Cities/Sketches by Boz. Pages in the front ofBleak House has handwriting in ink which appears to be a list of names.This set is complete. A CURIOUS DANCE ROUND A CURIOUS TREE with envelope

1860150841860. London: St. Luke's Hospital 1860. Original pale pink wrappers with original narrow "one penny" envelope. First Edition second and usual issue. Dickens describes the wretched conditions inside St. Luke's Hospital "established in 1751 for the treatment and care of lunatics" and in particular the "very sad and touching spectacle" of the annual Christmas Ball there dancing around the Christmas tree. He actually wrote the original piece in 1852 at which time it appeared in his Household Words Dickens's authorship was questioned until 1913 when the original manuscript -- in his hand -- turned up. It is here published in book form for the first time eight years later when Dickens gave permission for the hospital to use it as a fundraising appeal. The hospital added two items to update the piece: an article about the 1860 Ball from the "Times" plus a brief article "Contrast between 1852 and 1860" in which the hospital asserts that many of the deficiencies cited by Dickens have since been addressed. The results of the initial mailing were not good -- which is why for this second issue the final paragraph the actual appeal was highlighted in bold. This second issue not only has the final paragraph in bold it also has a pink wrapper not mauve -- though all are today faded it has the front cover title followed by a comma not by a period and it has a front cover border decorative only at the corners not all 'round. This is a fine copy of this very fragile item with scarcely any wear soil or foxing; as usual the pink wrappers have faded. As with almost all copies there is a vertical crease because the booklet was folded vertically when the fundraising appeal was mailed out in narrow envelopes. Included with this copy is the original unaddressed narrow envelope with "Postage One Penny" in the corner. Since it is exactly the size to fit within the folded booklet and a little too small to fit around the folded booklet it is our belief that this was the envelope for the hoped-for postage-paid contribution. With a wood-engraved frontispiece in each volume consisting of a centerpiece printed in black surrounded by four vignette illustrations printed in a grayish mauve. Tissue guards. Original moderate reddish brown bold-ribbed cloth. Covers stamped in blind front covers pictorially stamped in gilt depicting young Alfred reading to his mother. Spines lettered and stamped in gilt. Marbled endpapers and edges. Spines lightly sunned as usual. Some minor rubbing to corners and bottoms of spines. Some minor foxing in text as usual. Previous owner's bookplate on front pastedown of each volume. A lovely bright set almost fine. "The germ of this book was in the mind of Dickens nearly ten years before the idea was perfected. In 1843 he wrote to Douglas Jerrold concerning it but no immediate result followed. In style subject and composition it was different from anything he had attempted. For the first and only time he dictated his thoughts to a second person Chapters II and IV only are in his manuscript the balance being in the handwriting of Miss Georgina Hogarth his wife's sister. Originally it appeared in Household Words at irregular times from January 25 1851 to December 10 1853 inclusive. Narrator Master Humphrey was a lonely man who lived in London. He keeps old manuscripts in an antique grandfather clock by the chimney-corner and decides to start a little club called Master Humphrey's Clock where the members including Mr. Pickwick himself have a penchant for telling stories. In the book several short tales are recounted followed by the novels 'The Old Curiosity Shop' which follows the life of the beautiful and virtuous Little Nell and her Grandfather and 'Barnaby Rudge' Dickens first effort at historical fiction set during London's non-Popery 'Gordon' Riots Protestant rallying against the Roman Catholic Relief Act 1778. Engraved on wood by E.Landells C.Gray Vasey & S.Williams. The first edition of this work in book form as it was originally published as a weekly periodical. From the library of Dr. Oliver Sacks the renowned neurologist author and educator. He was in his life celebrated for his contributions to the understanding of the human brain and his ability to communicate complex scientific concepts to a broader audience. In doing so he highlighted the profound impact of neurological disorders on human identity and experience. His library is a reflection of this remarkable polymath's questing mind. Original twenty installments issued in nineteen monthly parts with 19 and 20 bound together. First edition first issue of text with "pricipal" misspelling to page 115 line 38 in Part 14. Lacking a few ads: "The Fisherman's Magazine and Review" slip 4 pp. in Part 2 "Liverpool & London & Globe" 4 pp. in Part 10 particularly scarce "The Economic Life Assurance Society" advertisement 4 pp. in Part 14 and "Scottish Union" 2 pp. and "Mappin Webb & Co." 2 pp. in Part 15. Parts 19/20 with "Foreign Bank Notes" slip which Hatton claims is "often found wanting" and "Scottish Union" advertisement in Part 9 is in scarce white ribbed paper Hatton writes: "Of 45 copies examined only two were seen of this paper". Part 1 has an extra yellow "Fry's Homeopathic Cocoa" 2 pp. advertisement and Part 18 has "Messrs. Chapman and Hall's New Publications" 8 pp. to rear not called for by Hatton. Our Mutual Friend is the last novel Dickens completed in his lifetime leaving his final novel The Mystery of Edwin Drood 1870 incomplete. Our Mutual Friend remains popular among readers because of its compelling plot line which examines the advantages and disadvantages of individual wealth. The story begins with John Harmon the estranged son of a wealthy miser who has inherited his father's money and as a condition of his inheritance is meant to marry Bella Wilfer. Instead of greeting his fortune Harmon fakes his own death and watches from disguise as his father's wealth brings fortune and misfortune to various members of the community. In this classic novel Dickens revisits many of the themes from his earlier works including the corruptive power of money and the virtues of the hard-working poor. First Edition. Original Wraps.
