1863WRCLIT82274London: Chapman & Hall 1863. Large thick octavo. Green cloth lettered in gilt decorated in blind. Frontis engraved title and plates including eight 'dark' plates by H.K. Browne. Ink name on front free endsheet light rubbing a couple of signatures proud spine a shade sunned a couple small nicks at toe of spine but an unusually good copy. Later impression in book form though with some of the errors of the first printing as yet uncorrected. The original 1857 printing was the last major Dickens title to be published by Bradbury & Evans and their imprint still appears on the verso of the printed title and at the base of the last page of text in this copy. The binding on this copy is comparable to the type of cloth and stamping characteristic of the primary binding of DOMBEY AND SON 1848 SMITH 12 ref. Chapman & Hall hardcover books

1853122121853. New York: Stringer & Townsend 1853. Original greyish-pink printed wrappers. Early first American edition of this the third of Dickens's nine "Extra Christmas Numbers" of his weekly periodical Household Words. This came out in London in December 1852 and then was published in America in early 1853 by several publishers McElrath & Lord doing the authorized American issue of HhW plus Harper plus this effort. Dickens himself wrote only the first two stories -- "The Poor Relation's Story" and "The Child's Story." This copy includes the delicate original greyish-pink wrappers and is in very good-plus condition minor edge-wear a few droplet-marks on some leaves within. Podeschi Yale B225. unknown books

1842141581842. New-York: Harper & Brothers 1842. 4 pp ads dated Nov 2 1842. Original brown printed wrappers. Third American Edition just one day after the first! of this book that resulted from Dickens's 1842 tour of America. As first put forth in a 1975 article by Peter Bracher and soon to be confirmed in Walter Smith's upcoming bibliography this edition was published on November 8th 1842 the day after Winchester's "New World" edition and Wilson's "Brother Jonathan" edition -- but the day before Lea & Blanchard's fourth American edition. Dickens was so upset by the lack of an international copyright law he forewent any negotiations with American publishers -- which is why none of these publishers had advance sheets and all simply had to wait in the harbor for the first boat to arrive with copies of the UK edition published October 19th and then rush to press. This Harper edition bears the date November 2nd on the ads and on the inside rear wrapper but as the above bibliographers have researched such a date is not necessarily the publication date when the book is actually available to the public. A curiosity of this edition is that although prices on the rear and inside covers are in cents the front cover twice states "price one shilling." This is a very good-plus copy with minor wear at the extremities rear wrapper a bit darkened minor foxing throughout as usual. Podeschi Yale A67; Carr UTexas B479; Wilkins p. 24. unknown books

1857TB22113London: Bradbury and Evans 1857. First Edition first issue in book form. Very good- in elaborate full leather calf covered boards with gilt borders on the front and rear boards five raised bands on the spine with red morocco title labels with gilt text in two of the compartments with gilt tool work in the others. The end sheets are marbled with gilt inner dentelles which have offset to the edges of the first and last free end pages. The top edge of the text block is gilt. The binding is by Ramage of London as can be seen by that firm's gilt embossed line on the front paste down just above the dentelle. The front hinge and joint have failed leaving the front board attached only with thin Japanese tissue. The leather on the spine is somewhat tanned. The rear hinge and joint are tight. There is a prior owner's book plate on the front paste down and the same owner's stamped name and address on the first free end page. Both boards are a slightly bowed. Illustrated with 40 engraved plates by H. K. Browne "Phiz". An octavo measuring 8 3/16" tall by 5 1/4" deep containing 625 pages of text. This is the first Issue of the publication identified by "Rigaud" rather than "Blandois" on pages 469 470 472 and 473 and with the signature mark "B2" on page 371.
