First Edition of one of the earliest -- and certainly most curious -- sequels/solutions to Charles Dickens's THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD published in Vermont only three years after the mystery was left unfinished when Dickens died in June 1870. It occupies a considerable 488 pages. According to the "Medium's Preface" written by James a Vermont clairvoyant the spirit of Charles Dickens wrote this book completing the tale by communicating with James while the latter slept. Thus James himself has no recollection of having written it.; there is also an "Author's Preface" written by Dickens from beyond the grave. Copy belonging to Scofield Thayer notable poet publisher and art collector with his bookplate on the front pastedown. Thayer was publisher and editor of the American literary political and art magazine "The Dial" from 1920 to 1929 his health deteriorating and the magazine eventually folding. The magazine published several notable authors including E. E. Cummings T. S. Eliot Sherwood Anderson and Ezra Pound. <br/><br/>Contains "Inspector Bucket" by Charles Dickens "Sergeant Cuff" by Wilkie Collins and "Monsieur Lecoq Master-Mind" by Emile Gaboriau. The second volume in the "Great Detective Stories" series comprised of three volumes. The series is uncommon and to find editions in dust jackets is exceedingly difficult. <br/><br/>Near Fine in a Very Good plus dust jacket. Spine ends lightly bumped. First American Edition issued as No. 114 in Holt's "Leisure Hour Series." THE MUDFOG PAPERS had originally appeared in America in the 1830s in the American Bentley's Miscellany and one of them "The Public Life of Mr. Tulrumble" was included in an 1837 Lea & Blanchard collection of sketches; the other papers' first appearance in book form was as an appendix to Mackenzie's LIFE OF DICKENS Philadelphia 1870. It was not until 1880 however that THE MUDFOG PAPERS were published as a separate book by Bentley in England and by Holt in America.
