An Attractive uniformly bound set of this very important body of works which includes I believe all of Dicken's Novels & the additional 'Christmas Stories' while he was still alive until 1863. All published dates are uniform. In other words there are no odd or out of place dates within the title runs. All are in Very Good to Near Fine condition with very little wear. All of these have the name 'Mary W Fuller' written in a neat hand in either pencil or pen on the first blank preceeding the front matter. Period yellow end papers remain bright and clean no marks what-so-ever. Likewise the bindings are also clean and crisp with lightly chipped and/or occasional small tears to the spine ends mostly on the tops. The overall appearance is quite lovely with the nearly perfect color matching A difficult task as these were published/printed by three different houses from 1861 through 1863. Many photos are available upon request. A Large & Heavy set which will require special packing and treatment for protection. The colourplates with tissue-guards captioned in dark red/brown. 8vo publisher’s original green cloth lettered and pictorially decorated in black on the upper cover with a ringing Christmas bell motif and on the spine in black in a holly and berry motif. xi 147 pp. A very nice copy of the most beloved Christmastime tale the green cloth still quite attractive with just a little evidence of age or use the interior uncommonly fresh and bright neat presentation inscription to the front free-fly. SCARCE FIRST EDITION. A shining example of what you get when a true masterpiece of literature is complemented by one of the world’s greatest book illustrators. An inspiring combination. <br> Dickens writes of A Christmas Carol in his preface: “I have endeavoured in this Ghostly little book to raise the Ghost of an Idea which shall not put my readers out of humour with themselves with each other with the season or with me. May it haunt their house pleasantly and no one wish to lay it.†Surely the author would be pleased with the perennial delight his little Christmas tale has stirred in the hearts and imaginations of generations of readers. Originally Rackham’s illustrated edition of Dickens’ classic was published during the war years 1915 and was quite well received. The artist successfully incorporated the ‘Phiz’ and Cruikshank styles into his own to create striking renditions of Victorian London with ample room to uniquely evoke ghostly fantasy images as well. They move up to London where they meet their only relative the antagonist Ralph Nickleby and Nicholas finds a job with the horrific Wackford Squeers who runs the Dotheboys Hall in Yorkshire. Like much of Dickens' work the novel has a tone of ironic social satire. It was originally published in monthly parts. The cruelty of the character Wackford Squeers was inspired by a real schoolmaster names William Shaw who worked in Yorkshire.'Nicholas Nickleby' was Dickens' third published novel after 'The Pickwick Papers' and 'Oliver Twist' and cemented his reputation as one of the greatest writers of the Victorian age. Charles Dickens is possibly the most well-known Victorian author with his fifteen novels still being widely read and performed as well as being studied in school and enjoyed by people of all ages.Illustrated by Hablot Knight Browne most often known by his pen-name 'Phiz'. As Phiz he illustrated many of Dickens' novels including 'David Copperfield' 'Dombey and Son' and 'Bleak House' as well as illustrating for 'Punch' throughout his life. Rebound in a modern cloth binding. Externally cockling to the front board to the fore edge. Some light marks to the boards and spine. Cloth to the head of the spine is a little wrinkled. Front hinge is starting but firm. Internally firmly bound. Pages are lightly age toned and generally clean with scattered spots heavier to the plates as usual. Publisher's blind stamped cloth gilt lettered to the spine early armorial bookplate of a Henry Birkbeck to the front pastedowns and his lightly pencilled ownership inscription to the front free endpaper of volume I the discreet contemporary ticket of the bookseller Fletcher of Norwich to the front of the same volume. Some fading to the spine a very small superficial split to the cloth at foot of the lower joint of volume I though it remains sounds and the set is very good overall. The result of a four month lecture tour of the States and Canada during which Dickens' opinions of the new world fell steadily. On his return it proved popular on this side of the Atlantic while American reviews were unanimously hostile Emerson noting "Truth is not his object for a single instant.". Dickens composed a mollifying Preface which was removed at the last minute and not published until after his death. In it he states "I went there expecting greater things than I found.
