Smith Dark plates were created using a machine process that tinted the etched plate and heightened its contrast. Unrecorded perhaps unique surviving set of Cruikshank's illustrations to Oliver Twist issued by the book's publisher as a loose possibly promotional set simultaneous with first publication. $1750 20 plates 150x243mm are loosely contained in a bifolium printed wrapper which has separated along the spine. This bears a modified version of the title page of the book's first edition in its first state. Dickens' authorship is referred to as 'Boz' but in place of the book's 'Three Volumes' designation we are offered: 'Plates Designed and Etched by George Cruikshank.' 20 plates are present all browned and spotted with a little scuffing to edges and corners. The wrappers do not state the number of plates to be issued in this sequence so it's not possible to tell whether the 20 present here are complete in themselves. By comparison with the 24 plates which appear in the first edition of the book this sequence which begins with the iconic image: 'Oliver asks for more' has 4 fewer than the printed book lacking the plates dated to August 1837 Oliver Recovering and Mr Claypole March 1838 as well as the last two plates: Fagin in the Condemned Cell and Rose Maylie and Oliver - the cancelled Fireside plate. The paper-size of these images is significantly larger than that of the first edition closer to that issued in the first serial publication Bentley's Miscellany making this collection a fascinating hybrid of first serial and first book publication. Oliver Twist was Dickens' second novel after Pickwick Papers and uses the orphan's compelling story as a vehicle for social commentary. This copy has the correct 'sister' for 'visiter' to page 123 and 'letter' for 'latter' to page 160. The third book by Charles Dickens. Nicholas Nickleby was originally published as a serial from 1838 to 1839. The novel centres on a young man Nicholas Nickleby who must support his mother and sister following his father's untimely death. The half title page is present. Ink inscription from previous owner to the list of plates. In a half calf binding. Externally a trifle rubbed with some rubbing to the extremities and marks to the boards. Number sticker to the front board. Hinges strained but still firm. Discoloration to the edges of the paste-downs and free endpapers. Sticker to the lower rear paste-down. Loss to the free endpapers with the front free endpaper loosening. Internally lacking pages 455-458 and the plate on page 457 but otherwise firmly bound. Pages age-toned with spotting throughout. All edges with contemporary marbling. Modern marbled endpapers. Frontispiece title page vignette and 38 full-page illustrations by H.K. Browne. A very good copy indeed the binding square and firm. The contents with the inevitable darkening of the plate edges with some offsetting to the opposite pages are otherwise clean throughout. The original blank front endpaper has the ownership inscription of the famous English cricketer Heathfield H. Stephenson dated 1894. A curious and appealing cricketing association copy. With all first issue points within the text present. Smith part I: 6b Charles Dickens' works are among the most celebrated in the English literary canon but cricket fans might argue that his greatest achievement was inadvertently triggering the long international cricket rivalry of England and Australia.�The first ever England vs Australia tour was originally conceived as a Victorian PR stunt and sponsorship opportunity by two entrepreneurial Melbourne-based businessmen the wine merchants Felix William Spiers and Christopher Pond. Having failed to persuade Charles Dickens to conduct a lecture tour of Australia the two Englishmen turned their attention to cricket. The sport's popularity was growing in Australia so Spiers and Pond invited a team of leading English cricketers to tour the country. Twelve players signed up for the tour. Named "The Eleven of All England" or "H. H. Stephenson's XI" after the English Captain Heathfield Harman Stephenson they each received £150 first class passage aboard SS Great Britain costing 70 guineas plus all expenses.�The inaugural English tour of Australia was a great success promoting the development of Australian cricket and inspiring later English teams to visit Australia. Beautifully bound in half morocco and raised tooled bands at the spine. The gilt titling is still strong. The marbled paper is bright and beautiful and is mirrored to the page edges. The text blocks are expectedly toned with some spotting. This is a very good copy. Originally published in serial form between 1855 and 1857. Contemporary half-morocco and marbled boards. 8vo. 624pp. Illustrations by Phiz. Extra-engraved title and frontispiece. First edition first issue. On the engraved title page the pound sign is after 100 on the signpost and there are seven studs on the trunk. The errata list has 10 corrections. The book has a total of forty plates including the frontis and engraved title. The binding is in good condition with some scuffing and edge-chipping to the marbled boards and some rubbing and wear to the leather spine and corners. There is an 1844 owner's signature on the flyleaf else the text is good with some scattered foxing and spotting. The gutter to the frontis and engraved title has some heavy staining. The plates are in good condition with some foxing occasionally heavy. This copy has been collated and is complete. Martin Chuzzlewit is seen as the last of Dickens' picaresque novels - while he was writing it Dickens told a friend that he thought it was his best work thus far. Chapman and Hall hardcover

The 100£ reward sign on title is often referred to as a first issue point though Hatton and Cleaver contend that there is no priority and that both plates were used in the monthly parts which preceded this first book edition. According to Smith "An earlier 13-line errata leaf exists with the same data that is found on the 14-line leaf; the setting was changed to 14-lines for a better balance." "A Tribute to Genius Centenary Testimonial 1812-1912" stamp with portrait of Dickens to ffep. Rubbing to extremities. Hinges cracked. Browning to plates as often else quite clean to interior. The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit originally appeared in twenty numbers bound in nineteen monthly parts January 1843-July 1844 and first appeared in book format in July 1844. It was the last of Dickens's picaresque novels. Dickens thought it to be his best work - which the author himself described as by "a hundred points immeasurably the best of my stories". The theme is "selfishness portrayed in a satirical fashion" through the characters against the backdrop of 19th century America. Dickens's biographer describes Martin Chuzzlewit as marking "a great change in Dickens's conception of moral characteristics. For the first time Dickens begins to explore the contradictions and difficulties of the contemporary human world; these are no longer figures defined by a single characteristic or animated by the willful principle of a 'humour' but ones who are seen to change with the changing world to live and grow" Ackroyd p. 392. Means b. 1875 Virginia; d. 1965 Berkeley was an agricultural engineer who worked in the U.S. Department of Agriculture Bureau of Soils and later opened a private consulting firm in San Francisco. John Ruyle was a book collector and printer from Berkeley but I'm not 100% sure it's the same guy because his pencil inscription on the flyleaf doesn't seem like it matches the handwriting of his other inscribed books.but Means dying in Berkeley in '65 around the time Ruyle was writing and collecting there strengthens the connection. In "David Copperfield" Dickens relates a number of significant early personal experiences including his work in a factory his schooling and reading and his development into a successful novel writer.
