1859126401859. London: Office of All The Year Round / Chapman & Hall 1859-1867. In nine volumes. Original self-wrappers first four and blue printed wrappers last five -- as issued.

First Editions of all nine "Extra Christmas Numbers" of this periodical that Charles Dickens founded and edited for its nine years of existence. Previously he had likewise founded Household Words which likewise lasted nine years -- and which has nine Extra Christmas Numbers as well. In addition to editing these tales Dickens also wrote a portion of them -- specifically per Eckel: Christmas 1859: THE HAUNTED HOUSE. Dickens wrote "The Mortals in the House" "The Ghost in Master B's Room" and "The Ghost in the Corner Room" as well as most of the other opening paragraphs. Christmas 1860: A MESSAGE FROM THE SEA. Dickens wrote Chapters I II and V plus passages in the others; the rest is by Wilkie Collins. Christmas 1861: TOM TIDDLER'S GROUND. Dickens wrote Chapters I VI and VII. Christmas 1862: SOMEBODY'S LUGGAGE. Dickens wrote "His Leaving It Til Called For" "His Boots" "His Brown-Paper Parcel" "His Wonderful End" plus part of "His Umbrella." Christmas 1863: MRS. LIRRIPER'S LODGINGS. Dickens wrote Chapters I and VII. Christmas 1864: MRS. LIRRIPER'S LEGACY. Dickens again wrote Chapters I and VII. Christmas 1865: DR. MARIGOLD'S PRESCRIPTIONS. Dickens wrote Chapters I VI and VIII. Christmas 1866: MUGBY JUNCTION. Dickens wrote "Barbox Brothers" "Barbox Brothers and Co." "Main Line" and "No. 1 Branch Line." Christmas 1867: NO THOROUGHFARE. Dickens wrote the Overture Act III plus parts of Act I and Act IV; Wilkie Collins wrote the rest. As for condition all nine issues are near-fine just some very minor wear to the edges the last with a damp-mark at the top of the front wrapper; the fourth eighth and ninth annual issues still have unopened leaves. The last one includes the loosely-inserted ad leaf for the Grand Christmas Number of the periodical "London Society." It is very tough to assemble all nine of these in this condition. Octavo bound in three quarters morocco over marbled boards gilt titles to the spine raised bands marbled endpapers top edge gilt. With 40 engraved plates including frontispiece and engraved title by H. K. Browne. In near fine condition. Dombey and Son "was well received by its readers and is considered to be the first novel that reflects Dickens's artistic maturity… Dickens told his first biographer 'It was to do with Pride what its predecessor Martin Chuzzlewit has done with Selfishness" Schlicke 280. The work "has a sense of the numinous is more profoundly touched by the sense of last things than any of Dickens' previous novels. It is larger in conception so that human life is seen in terms of its beginning and its end so that grief and forgiveness become more powerful forces within it… Dickens is aware of its status as art and provides here a simulacrum of human life touched by majesty and purpose" Ackroyd 526. The original serials contain the first of Browne's "dark plates" "On the dark Road" in part 18 created by the engraver's lining machine and roulettes that tint the etched plate creating heightened contrast Johannsen Phiz 309. Octavo bound in three-quarters morocco over marbled boards with gilt titles to the spine in six compartments within gilt bands all edges speckled red. With 40 illustrations by Hablot Knight Brown “Phiz†including frontispiece and vignette title page. In very good condition. “In Little Dorrit Dickens mounts his single most ferocious onslaught against England and English society; against its government against its financiers against its artists and even against its ordinary citizens who at least in Bleeding Heart Yard believed that …foreigners were always immoral… that foreigners had no independent spirit…†Ackroyd 758. Perhaps unsurprisingly many reviewers reviled the book upon its publication. Dickens’ friend Hans Christian Andersen advised the author to ignore the critics: “They are forgotten in a week and your book stands and lives†Ackroyd 780. And indeed Little Dorrit does: not only a commercial success in its day poor press notwithstanding but also esteemed now as a “wonderfully rich novel— rich in ideas rich in characterization rich in incident and written in a richly imaginative prose… Many modern critics regard it as Dickens’ masterpiece†Watts 108. 1838121730London: Richard Bentley 1838. First edition of Dickens’ popular retelling of the memoirs of celebrated English clown Joseph Grimaldi. Octavo 2 volumes original publisher's decorated dark green cloth with gilt titles and gilt pictorial vignettes to the spines frontispiece portrait of Grimaldi and 12 illustrations by George Cruikshank. With the 36-page undated publisher's catalogue bound-in at the end of vol.2. and plate facing page 238 in the second state. In fine condition. Housed in two half morocco and chemise slipcases. After the legendary pantomime's death Dickens was invited by Richard Bentley to edit and improve Thomas Egerton Wilks's clumsily written Life of Grimaldi which had been based on the clown's own notes which Dickens did under his regular nom de plume "Boz". As a child Dickens saw Grimaldi perform at the Star Theatre Rochester in 1820. The Memoirs of Joseph Grimaldi illustrated by George Cruikshank sold well to Dickens's surprise. In near fine condition with some toning. "Dickens turned in Oliver Twist to the novel of crime and terror. Some characters are drawn with humorous realism but for the most part humor is dimmed by gloomy memories of the authors own neglected childhood and sensational scenes are shrouded in an atmosphere genuinely eerie and sinister That Dickens shared with his contemporaries the conviction that the novel should be an instrument of social reform is evident in Oliver Twist" Baugh. 1870133997London: Chapman & Hall 1870. First edition from the original parts Dickens' final novel with them bound in the rear. Octavo bound in three quarters calf over marbled boards frontispiece portrait of dickens 12 wood-engraved plates original wrappers bound in rear. In near fine condition. Charles Dickens’ novels regularly revolved around masks dual identities and other secrets. The Mystery of Edwin Drood however “enlarged and strengthened such matters in the pursuit of a larger vision a vision which depicts the ‘lanes of light’ between the dark pillars of a crypt and which reflects upon ‘that mysterious fire which lurks in everything†Ackroyd 1056. Unfortunately at the time of his death on June 9 1870 Dickens had written only six parts of the book three of which had been published. The remaining three were published posthumously. Dickens had so closely guarded the plot’s outlines even from his closest friends that to this day the identity of Drood’s killer remains a topic for speculation discussion and debate. “There are few of Dickens’ stories which are superior in the matter of composition… one of the best unfinished mystery stories in literature†Eckel 96. This tantalizing tale has been adapted in film and television several times. Chapman & Hall hardcover

1910008699London: The Educational Book Co. Ltd. 1910. There are no dates in the volumes I examined. 1910 seems to be about right. This makes it more or less a "Centenary Edition" since C D was born in 1812 and the publishers would have wanted to get it finished in time for the Centenary my guess. I am not sure from where they get "1200 Illustrations". It seems only the 500 done by H F made it into the books. The condition is surprising and outstanding. The volumes have certainly never been read except for me dipping into Oliver Twist. The main "Fault" which is hardly such is a gentle uniform yellowing. 5 raised bands with elaborate intertwining leaves occupy 4 compartments; gold titles the other 2. Gold "C D" on the front cover; top edge gold; original reinforced interior hinges; "marbled" endpapers appear to be of the printed variety and are slightly foxed around the margins. All gold is bright and fresh. My price matches another similar set on in June 2015. Postage for 18 books will be far in excess of Abe's quote but I am prepared to subsidise some cost of postage overseas if you contact me direct. Please see my listings for other editions of C D. Centenary Edition. Half Morocco & Red Cloth. Fine./None. Illus. by Furniss Harry. 191x823x137mm. Collectable. The Educational Book Co. Ltd., hardcover
