br. Il 9 giugno 1870 Charles Dickens muore a cinquantotto anni a Gads Hill, la sua casa a Higham, nel Kent. La notizia del suo decesso fa subito il giro del mondo. Negli Stati Uniti, Longfellow, il poeta più famoso del secondo Ottocento americano, dichiara di non aver mai assistito a un cordoglio tanto diffuso per la morte di un autore, con «il Paese intero colpito dal lutto». Il giorno successivo alla sua dipartita, il Daily News sentenzia: «È stato senza dubbio il romanziere di quest'epoca». In Inghilterra l'opprimente senso di perdita attraversa tutte le classi sociali, in primo luogo la classe lavoratrice che si è sentita ampiamente rappresentata nelle sue opere. La percezione generale è che l'anima stessa del popolo inglese, il suo umorismo e la sua malinconia, la sua baldanza e la sua ironia, abbiano trovato una piena espressione nei romanzi di Dickens. Scrivendo questa imponente biografia dell'autore di "Grandi speranze" e di altri capolavori della letteratura mondiale, Peter Ackroyd non soltanto non si sottrae alla percezione dei contemporanei di Dickens, ma mostra come la sua morte, per tutti i vittoriani, sia stata la testimonianza di un'enorme transizione. Più della stessa regina Vittoria, Charles Dickens appare, in queste pagine, il rappresentante illustre di un'epoca non perché ce ne restituisce semplicemente la testimonianza, ma perché percepisce, saggia, proclama, nella sua narrativa, le svolte e i passaggi fondamentali di un secolo, sino al punto che la sua stessa vita si trasforma in «un simbolo di quel periodo». Sotto la penna di Ackroyd, la biografia di un grande scrittore diventa così uno strumento di vera conoscenza, il segno più compiuto del trascorrere di un'epoca intera.

Lovely Scrooge-decorated bookplate inside front board bears Barks' hand-written signature and book number. Slipcase bears large excellent colour illustration of Scrooge posing in cowboy hat and red bandana with sack of gold, pick, canteen, ammunition belt, and rifle. Contents include: "Donald Duck's Christmas on Bear Mountain", "Dickens Redone" (two-page illustrated commentary, "The Storybook Scrooge" (one-page commentary), "Uncle Scrooge", "Uncle Scrooge's Christmas Carol", "The Triumph of Scrooge McDuck" (10 page colour illustrated commentary), "Uncle Scrooge the Lemonade King", and selected bibliography. Unpaginated. Book measures almost 12.5" high by 9.5" wide by 5/8" thick. Clean and glossy with negligible wear. Prior owner's signature and date neatly written upon bookplate on 'This Book Belongs To ______" line. Half-inch opening to back panel of dust jacket at edge of lower left corner seems to have resulted from the paper cracking rather than from wear. Very light wear to attractive slipcase. br. "Great Expectations" è un romanzo che ha appassionato generazioni di lettori andando incontro ai mutamenti estetici e culturali di oltre un secolo e mezzo. Come ogni classico, è un testo che si arricchisce a ogni nuova lettura: la molteplicità di storie e di destini che si intrecciano alla vicenda di Pip, ellittica e sfuggente, l'abile gioco di distorsione di schemi rappresentativi e topoi letterari, uniti alla riflessione metatestuale, rendono il capolavoro dickensiano un'opera ricca di fascino e capace di suscitare sempre nuovi interrogativi.
