Battista Vendramini Mosca 1808.</p><p>4to pp. 28; printed on heavy paper; nineteenth century boards spine label; a fine copy with recent heraldic book-plate of Clementi to front pastedown.</p><p>First and only edition of this document outlining the internal organisation of the Teatro Berico in Vicenza founded in 1799 as the theatre of the Accademia del Teatro and financed by subscription i.e. by selling permanent rights to seats or boxes. To avoid competition with the recently constructed local opera house Teatro Eretenio the Teatro Berico is not to be open during the time of the carneval.</p><p>All academicians named in the first section are entitled to vote on internal affairs; the offices of president and financial chancellor are regulated and the compensation of the office of 'custode' or janitor is outlined. Various additions to the original founding documents are listed.</p><p>The final section covers the financial accounts of the Academy with incoming funds from seat sales offset against the outgoings. An ephemeral playbill for Thomas Dibdin's "The Chinese Sorcerer" a two-act spectacle with characters including the Emperor Qianlong a magician called Whang Fong the head of a "Horde of Tartar Plunderers" and a familiar by the name of Chop-Stick. The play was first performed on 31 March 1823 with this bill promoting the sixth performance. Scenes are set at the imperial court in the faraway reaches of the empire in an enchanted valley and a necromantic tower and inside the "Magnificent Hall of Tien superbly decorated for the Feast of Lanterns". Patrons of the New Theatre Royal could also look forward to a performance of "The Siege of Belgrade" a popular comic opera premiered in 1791. Letterpress broadside 320 x 175 mm. Near-contemporary pencil mark beside the name of the actor Mr. Harley. Sometime roughly cut along edges loss at foot affecting text of advert for another play. A very good example. unknown

A very scarce playbill booklet featuring advertisements for Charles Kean's performances of 'That House that Jack Built' and 'The Grand Pantomime' at the renowned Theatre Royal on Drury Lane with engravings depicting characters from the performances. In the original paper covers.Illustrated with seventeen wood engraved illustrations depicting pantomime characters. This very scarce playbill booklet features an advertisement for Charles Kean and his wife's performances at the Drury Lane Theatre including 'The House That Jack Built'. Kean was a famous actor and theatre manager known for his revivals of Shakespearian plays. Undated dated by a record of performances held at the Drury Lane Theatre. In the original paper covers. Externally creased with marks small closed tears to the extremities and a closed tear to the tail of the spine. Internally most pages disbound from covers but present. This is an exceptionally lovely copy of this scarce playbill which also happens to be signed on the first page by Alfred Lunt Lynne Fontanne Richard Whorf and Francis Compton. Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde 16 October 1854 - 30 November 1900 was an Irish playwright novelist essayist and poet. After writing in different forms throughout the 1880s he became one of London's most popular playwrights in the early 1890s. He is remembered for his epigrams his novel The Picture of Dorian Gray and his plays. As a spokesman for aestheticism he tried his hand at various literary activities: he published a book of poems lectured in the United States and Canada on the new "English Renaissance in Art" and then returned to London where he worked prolifically as a journalist. Known for his biting wit flamboyant dress and glittering conversation Wilde became one of the best-known personalities of his day. At the turn of the 1890s he refined his ideas about the supremacy of art in a series of dialogues and essays and incorporated themes of decadence duplicity and beauty into his only novel The Picture of Dorian Gray 1890. Wilde's huge popularity as a playwright began with his production of Lady Windermere's Fan his recherché attitude and personal aesthetics reflected in his writing. Lady Windermere's Fan A Play About a Good Woman is a four-act comedy by Oscar Wilde first produced on Saturday 20 February 1892 at the St. James's Theatre in London. The story concerns Lady Windermere who suspects that her husband is having an affair with another woman. She confronts him with it but although he denies it he invites the other woman Mrs. Erlynne to his wife's birthday ball. Angered by her husband's supposed unfaithfulness Lady Windermere decides to leave her husband for another lover. After discovering what has transpired Mrs. Erlynne follows Lady Windermere and attempts to persuade her to return to her husband and in the course of this Mrs. Erlynne is discovered in a compromising position. It is then revealed Mrs. Erlynne is Lady Windermere's mother who abandoned her family twenty years before the time the play is set. Mrs. Erlynne sacrifices herself and her reputation to save her daughter's marriage. Dixie Virginia Carter May 25 1939 - April 10 2010 was an American film television and stage actress. She starred as Julia Sugarbaker on the CBS sitcom Designing Women 1986-93 and as Randi King on the CBS drama series Family Law 1999-2002. In 2007 she was nominated for an Emmy Award for her role as Gloria Hodge on the ABC series Desperate Housewives 2006-07. Harold Rowe "Hal" Holbrook Jr. born February 17 1925 is an American film and stage actor and television director. He first received critical acclaim in 1954 for a one-man stage show he developed while studying at Denison University performing as Mark Twain. Holbrook made his film debut in Sidney Lumet's The Group 1966. He later gained international fame for his performance as Deep Throat in the 1976 film All the President's Men. He played Abraham Lincoln in the 1976 miniseries Lincoln. He has also appeared in such films as Julia 1977 The Fog 1980 Creepshow 1982 The Firm 1993 Hercules 1997 and Men of Honor 2000. Holbrook's role as Ron Franz in Sean Penn's Into the Wild 2007 earned him both Screen Actors Guild Award and Academy Award nominations for Best Supporting Actor. As a television actor Holbrook is known for starring in and directing four episodes in Designing Women as Reese Watson opposite his wife Dixie Carter. He has guest-starred in many critically acclaimed television series such as NCIS The West Wing The Sopranos ER Bones Grey's Anatomy and on Hawaii Five-0. ONE: Typed Circular Letter with genuine signature of 'H C Lacey'. on letterhead in red and black ink with Shakespeare's of 'Shakespeare Memorial Theatre Stratford-upon-Avon Endowment Fund.' 1 November 1923. 1p. 8vo. Addressed to 'Dear Madam'. 32 lines of text. After two paragraphs praising Shakespeare in inflated tones 'Other nations have produced a Goethe a Dante an Ibsen a Tolstoy a Moliere but no other nation has produced a Shakespeare.' Lacey explains: 'November 8th. is the tercentenary of the publication of the first Folio of his Works. Yet it is to our reproach that the one great Memorial to Shakespeare on English soil – the Theatre Library Sculpture and Art Gallery Reading Room and Lecture Hall at Stratford-upon-Avon is unable to complete its catalogue maintain a librarian or fully develop its educational facilities owing to lack of funds. From the Macqueen-Pope papers. See his entry in the Oxford DNB. Interesting London ephemera: the plans for the Refectory Club were clearly ambitious but there is little to be gleaned about it and it is unclear whether it even opened. Zinkeisen and her sister Dora are the subject of a 2022 monograph by Philip Kelleway Emma Roodhouse and Nicola Evans. The four items in good condition lightly aged but with rust staining from a paperclip. Folded for postage. ONE: Typed Letter to MP signed ‘D Mallett’ but with ‘For Secretary’ typed beneath this. 1p 4to. Begins ‘We have been informed by Mr. Nathan that you would like to become a member of our Club. We shall of course be honoured to accept you but regret that we must ask you to apply formally for membership on the enclosed application form. After you have completed this we should be grateful if you would forward it to Mr. Nathan for proposal.’ Information regarding fees follows. With three photographs of interiors Dining Hall Lounge and Common Room together with reproduction of drawing of the Dining Hall on the cover. ‘The mediaeval Dining Hall is architecturally unique with its finely vaulted ceiling supported by columns and pilasters of the utmost delicacy. / Curved wall panels provide the perfect setting for exquisite murals by Miss Anna Zinkeisen. The distinguished artist has captured the atmosphere of the period and portrayed it ith touches of subtle humour and gaiety. . The Lounge pannelled in oak with rich period furnishings is a pleasing combination of things old and new. The old has been made to serve again in an unusual recessed long bar. / The pine-pannelled Common Room dominated by a fine old refectory table is reserved for private dinner parties. .’ The architect is named as H.
