Mary Russell Mitford's play Foscari premiered at the Theatre Royal on November 4th 1826 less than ten days before this performance. The play's protagonist Francesco Foscari was the longest reigning doge in Venetian history. Foscari was played by Charles Kemble a member of the great Kemble acting family alongside Charles Mayne Young James Prescott Warde and Daniel Egerton. Loss to the top corner affecting only the margin; light foxing and toning; but for the corner loss quite an exceptional copy. <br /> <br /> This broadside outlines the lottery scheme to benefit for the Soldiers' and Sailors' Orphan Home Fund. As well as a benefit concert after which the prized were to be announced. This benefit was scheduled to be held at the Grover's Theater in Washington D. C. on August 2 1866 here postponed to October 11. The advertisement states that 300000 tickets were for sale at $1.00 each and 75000 presents awarded. Presents range from cutlery to "1 Three-story Brick Residence H street between 6th and 7th" valued at $18000. The nature of the benefit speaks to a significant problem facing the country in the aftermath of the Civil War the abundance of orphaned children. Rare in commerce.
