188696337September 18th 1886. 1886. Very good. - A quote alluding to his role as the statue of Adonis which comes to life in the burlesque musical of the same name "I never was born / I was quarried" signed by the American stage and screen actor Henry E. Dixey. The quote penned on 3-3/8 inch high by 4-1/2 inch wide paper is dated "Sept 18th / 86". The paper is mounted in glue from the verso onto heavier stock which was once mounted into an album. The top right corner is diagonally clipped though not affecting the text. Very good.
Born in Boston the American actor and theatre producer Henry E. Dixey 1859-1943 joined the cast at the Howard Athenaeum when only 9 years old playing the child character Peanuts in Augustin Daly's "Under the Gaslight". He went on to perform in many plays and musicals and was best known for his role in the burlesque musical "Adonis" from 1883 to 1885. Dixie played the title role of a handsome male statue that comes to life and finding the ways of man unpleasant chooses to turn back into stone. Dixie went on to perform other roles on stage and in silent movies. He was one of the group of "gentlemen" invited by Robert Emmet Odlum to witness his fatal jump from the Brooklyn Bridge and was the one who timed the jump with his gold stopwatch. 1920List330New York: Arnold Genthe 1920. Silver gelatin print 6 ¾ x 9 ¼ inches on larger mount. Signed by Genthe on the mount inscribed by Marlowe as Marlowe Sothern on the mount as follows: “To Jean: our little comrade on our walks in Beautiful Stockbridge. In remembrance also of 'Sun Yat Sen' and Choo-Chio Chow. September. 1940. Julia Marlowe Sothern. Very Good. An uncommon image of the actress feminist and suffrage advocate Julia Marlowe who adopted the name - though never legally - Julia Marlowe Sothern after working with the Shakespearean actor E.H. Sothern. Ill health led Marlowe to retire from the stage in 1924 and she was seldom seen in public. This photograph inscribed later in her life is an uncommon relic from her reclusive later years. We can find no record of a Jean or the names mentioned.

Arnold Genthe who famously photographed the San Francisco Earthquake of 1906 from the site of his destroyed studio moved to New York in 1911 where he became a portrait photographer. He most likely took this picture in his stint on the east coast. We find no other record of this specific portrait of Marlowe. Some silvering at margins otherwise excellent with some light normal tanning to mount. Arnold Genthe unknown
