1817AQ33185London: s.n. 1817. Single leaf broadside. Some creasing and browning. Inked '65' to head of recto. An early playbill - marking the eighth performance - for Charles Edward Horn's 1786-1849 'Serio-Comick Opera' The Persian Hunters which was first staged just nine days earlier on August 13 1817. Based upon a Persian tale in which a Sultan conceives of the notion of romantic love seeking a partner who was ignorant of his royal station and attracted to him for what the La Belle Assemblee described in a contemporary review as 'his mere person'. The periodical notes that the 'scenery is peculiarly good pleasing and characteristic; the music is appropriate accordance with the scenery characters and story'. The building which later housed the English Opera House had been used to stage exhibitions and performances of various types including at different points those of the Royal Academy and Madam Tussauds since 1765 but was not licensed as a patent theatre until 1809. Rebuilt in 1816 by Arnold it re-opened and operated under this name until 1830 when it burned down and later replaced by the Lyceum Theatre. The summer of 1817 marked a time of great innovation for the London stage; both the Theatre Royal Drury Lane and the English Opera House introduced gas lighting throughout replacing candles - changing the atmosphere of the production and theatre ownership a somewhat safer proposition. The proud inclusion of 'The GAS LIGHTS are now introduced over the whole Stage' as the headline of this playbill demonstrates the marketing emphasis that was put on the endeavour. . Dimensions 190 x 305mm. [s.n.] unknown
1825AQ33560London: s.n. 1825. Single leaf broadside. Two small marginal holes to left hand edge. An early playbill marking the ninth performance of Irish dramatist James Sheridan Knowles' 1784-1862 adaptation of Schiller's famous revolutionary Swiss drama William Tell. First staged at Drury Lane on the 11th May Knowles' translation was criticised by Thomas Rea for its excessive melodrama making the hero 'so loquacious as to seem almost a braggart.' Despite this the performance of William Macready in the title role was much applauded and Thomas Archer was suitably despicable as the villainous character of Gesler. The first adaptation of William Tell performed in England was staged at the Royal Amphitheatre on 7th June 1802 with Knowles' version being the second produced in 1825; the first - and a more critically acclaimed - full English translation had been produced by Samuel Robinson only months prior. The subsequent evening entertainment is advertised as the sixtieth showing of Der Freischütz the Romantic opera by Carl Maria von Weber 1786-1826. . Dimensions 204 x 350 mm. [s.n.] unknown

17435Both from 'Casa Mickie the second spelled 'Casa Micki' Gardone Riviera Lago di Garda Italy. 16 July 1953 and 5 August 1953. Two chatty and characteristic letters. ONE: 15 July 1953. 2pp. 4to. On aged paper with wear to edges and vertical closed tear at foot. She begins by praising his books 'Ladies First' 1952 and 'Shirtfronts and Sables' 1953 adding in an autograph note 'Yes I bought them when in London.' The first contains 'that wonderfully beautiful tribute to Ellen Terry. I don't know when I have read anything which moved me so deeply you rose to great heights when you wrote that. You are beginning to run James Agate very close on my shelves'. She next turns to her books on Henry Irving and Ellen Terry: 'Did you read the Shaw-Terrty letters - autograph note: 'Of course you did!' they sent my blood pressure mounting sky high - his at least. What a stupid wind bag of a man and how charming her letters were to him. It was the same with Mrs Patrick Campbell's letter to him and from him.' The rest of the letter contains references to 'dear Seymour Hicks' 'adorable Ella' and a trip on her birthday 'to Asolo where Duse lived': 'Oh what a sad town and the saddest of all the room in the little museum filled with her belongings - some photographs one signed one of Ibsen looking furious with the world in general some books a few bits of rather paltry jewellry and some dresses and shoes. There was the inevitable intense letter written by that cad d'Annunczio sic in his sprawling self satisfied writing'. She ends with an apology for 'this over long and - no doubt - badly spelt - letter' and with remembrances to 'Mrs "Mac.Pope"'. TWO: 5 August 1953. 1p. 4to. On aged paper creased and with fraying along one edge. She is using the abbreviation to him that she also sends 'to Yvonne Arnaud and Julia Neilson': '"T.R.N.A." - in other words this requires no answer'. She thanks him for information on 'the mirror act' which she saw 'years and years ago at the Middlesbrough Empire and the name on the bill was "The Wylie Brothers"'. She is pleased that 'Teddy Knox' remembers her: 'The last time I saw him was in Rome when I think he was bored stiff with St. Peters but full of admiration for the "Wedding Cake"'. She prefers Knox's wife Clarice Mayne to him and discusses the film that was to be made about her life. Both from 'Casa Mickie [ the second spelled 'Casa Micki' ], Gardone Riviera, Lago di Garda, Italy. 16 July [ 1953 ] and 5 August unknown
