15267BERNHARDT Sarah 1844-1923 French actress. Autograph Letter Signed to Henry Roujon Director of Fine Arts. 1896; 4 pages on monogram paper. Traces of scotch tape at the crease slight paper loss not affecting text. Beautiful letter from Sarah Bernhardt graciously an invitation to a public evening event while expressing offense at the manner in which it was offered : "I do not have the pleasure to know you but I know you a very gallant man. I think I get treated a little cavalierly at the Ministry of Fine Arts Mr. Bernheim offers me by telephone to pay me for my evening at Versailles with a stamp of 1000 francs. I prefer going to Versailles to honor the sovereign who visits us. My title of woman deserved more respect and politeness regarding this evening the artist I am demands more respect. The suggestion that I should be paid for my own evening out is weighing heavily on me and I beg to make it understood by the right parties. I do not accept anything nothing polite thanks to myself would be enough ." She is very likely referring to the visit in October 1896 of Tsar Nicholas II and the Tsarina. The gala is given in honor of the sovereigns at Versailles on October 8 1896 by the<br/>President Felix Faure. unknown books
