In addition to acting as editor of the works of his colleague James Clerk Maxwell Niven was the teacher of one of the greatest mathematicians and philosophers of the twentieth century Alfred North Whitehead. The item is from the papers of the presumed recipient Mrs Evelyn Julia Allan of the Chelsea Red Cross. 2pp 12mo. In fair condition lightly aged and worn. Signed ‘W. D. Niven’ and addressed to ‘Dear Mrs Allen’. He was pleased to receive her letter ‘reminding me of old times’ but he had not forgotten her as he has ‘sometimes heard Dr. J. M Bruce speak about you & your family’. He has ‘of course’ often heard about her brother and is ‘glad to know that his children are such fine little fellows’. He is sorry that he can only give one vote to her candidate. ‘The other - I have only two - I must give to Mrs Fuller’s’. Although the film was a critical and financial disappointment at the time of release it garnered several prominent fans including Jacques Lacan who purportedly used it in psychoanalysis classes as an example of the paranoid mind. With the stamp of Baker and her then-lover Giuseppe Pepito "Joseph" Abatino on the verso. <br/><br/>A young orphaned laundress seeks employment as a nightclub dancer in order to raise money for her childhood friend who has been wrongly accused of murder. Baker's fourth film appearance.<br/><br/>Baker moved to France in 1925 where she quickly gained success as an erotic dancer and actress starring in several films throughout the 1930s including "Zouzou" 1935 and "Princesse Tam-Tam" 1935. When France entered into World War II in 1939 Baker was recruited by the Deuxieme Bureau a branch of French military intelligence and became an "honorable correspondent." The actress gathered information about German troop locations housed members of the Free French effort and helped them access visas and carried secret Allied transmissions throughout Europe while ostensibly touring as an entertainer. Baker was awarded the Croix de guerre and the Rosette de la Resistance for her bravery and in 1945 was named a Chevalier de Legion d'honneur the highest order of merit for military and civil action.<br/><br/>Set in Paris. <br/><br/>8.5 x 10.5 inches. A vintage original Finnish cinema-foyer POSTER for the first screening in Finland March 1965 of the celebrated film Zorba the Greek starring Anthony Quinn and Alan Bates. A rolled poster i.e. no folding creases in Fine condition approximate size is 23.5 inches by 16 inches standard Finnish A2 format. With minor signs of use: one very short tear to right edge and similar to bottom edge neither immediately noticeable. Minor print-soiling to verso where there is also a small pen inscription of film-title and date. Minor handling creases to the corners and some minor dings along the left edge of the poster suggesting that it may have been mounted with clips - there are neither pin-holes nor tape residue marks. In fantastic clean condition otherwise Fine or better. Artist-signed in the plate. A small archive of approximately 75 leaves largely regarding Francis Ford Coppola's Zoetrope Studios belonging to Coppola's long-time producer Fred Roos 1976-1989. <br /> <br /> The majority of the archive dates from the early 1980s with a substantial amount of material dedicated to the acquisition of General Service Studios in Hollywood for the short-lived Zoetrope Studios production facilities in 1980 sold in 1984 as well as copies of letters to Marlon Brando Gary Marshall and Roddy McDowall an autograph letter signed from Roddy McDowall to Coppola various press announcements including one for the 1981 film "One from the Heart" and one for the 1982 film "Hammett" as well as various other business documents and proposals.<br /> <br /> The archive includes:<br /> <br /> An autograph letter signed from Roddy McDowall on McDowall's letterhead dated March 27 1976 genially inquiring about working with Coppola and his newly formed company Coppola Cinema 7 with a Xerographic copy of Roo's agreeable response to McDowall stapled to the top left corner of McDowall's letter on Coppola Cinema Seven letterhead dated April 10 1976 written on behalf of Coppola who was working in the Philippines on "Apocalypse Now" at the time. <br /> <br /> A substantial press kit announcing the formation of Zoetrope Studios in 1980 and the acquisition of General Service Studios in Hollywood. Housed in an illustrated two-color folder the press kit includes over 40 pages of press releases and includes a tour map of the studios and eight accompanying colored pages of the history of each stop on the tour as well as a six page press release for the 1982 Wim Wender's film "Hammett" with two accompanying reference photographs one of Wenders and one of star Frederic Forrest.<br /> <br /> A four-page press release on "Electronic Cinema: The First Stage" the state-of-the-art production and editing system used in "One from the Heart" circa 1981.<br /> <br /> A two-page "Proposal for Rolling Stone Issue Produced by Zoetrope Studios" circa 1981.<br /> <br /> A Xerographic duplication of a typed letter signed from Coppola to Marlon Brando circa 1981 cordially responding to a proposal about a Native American television series "The Other People with the copied post-script annotation of "Come and visit us at the studio some more.
