A choice selection of the best-known French fairy tales A charming illustrated selection from the most important corpus of fairy tales published in the 18th century Le Cabinet des fées published in 41 volumes in 1785-9. The first volume prints the eight famous tales by Charles Perrault originally published as Histoires ou Contes du temps passé 1697: "Le Petit Chaperon rouge" "Les Fées" "La Barbe-bleue" "La Belle au bois dormant" "Le Chat botté" "Cendrillon" "Riquet à la houppe" and "Le Petit Poucet". The concluding tale is "L'Adroite princesse" by Perrault's niece Marie-Jeanne L'Héritier. The second volume has three more Perrault tales "Griselidis" "Peau d'Âne" and "Les Souhaits ridicules" together with "Persinette" by Mademoiselle de La Force "Incarnat Blanc et Noir" attributed to Chevalier de Mailly "Kadour" a tale set in Kashmir and "Les Deux Pantoufles". Each volume has a frontispiece of a full-page woodcut on the half-title verso; 15 of the tales have woodcut vignettes at their head. 2 vols bound in one duodecimo 130 x 82 mm pp. 4 iv 173 1; iv 169 3. 1679045233Paris: De L'Imprimerie Royale 1679. Second Edition. Hardcover Vellum. Good Condition. Willem Swidde. Contemporary full mottled calf gilt with armorial stamp to both boards. Dry and cracked hinges weak but holding. Tide mark to bottom corner of the volume heavy at the beginning largely effecting the text but lightly to the plates as well. On Perrault's advise Louis XIV included 39 fountains in the gardens of Versailles each illustrating one of the fables of Aesop. The 41 plates here are of the 39 fountains plus a map of the garden and a view of the entrance. Magnificent and striking Art Deco full morocco binding by J. Lambert of a lush edition of the most classic fairy tale. No. 25 of 30 copies with illustrations in two states apart from text as well as several of the 39 illustrations shown in their progressive stages of the coloring process. states but then also presented as a progressive with the each step of the coloring process presented. 4to. 24.5 by 16.5 cm. Although the story is short with pagination running from 1 to 33 with the last page not paginated and there are two pages of verse two pages describing the pagination the book is thick thanks to the thickness of the paper -- the leaves could fairly be described as of a card stock. There are about 140 leaves in all with heavy gilt edges. Original wraps bound in. Notwithstanding the occasional light fox mark we can comfortably grade this copy as Fine. The slipcase remains very solid. Its paper pastedown does have a few scratches and spme schmutz. Jean Porson unknown

Married in 1892 she and Lucien Pissarro shared a deep admiration for William Morris and the artistic ideals embodied by his Kelmscott Press books. Following the birth of their daughter Orovida in 1893 the couple established the Eragny Press which specialized in high-quality literary editions illustrated with wood-engravings. Publisher's cardboard box with the titles on the top board: 12 Superior English Made lantern slides. Handwritten: Red Riding Hood. Signs of rubbing on the box. A stop in the split lid at 2cm. On plate 9 paper is missing which circles the plate in a border. On plate 12 the black part has a small scratch this part encircling the medallion which is projected by the lantern. Also featured is Charles Perrault's description of the now-lost Labyrinth of Versailles a creation by the great Le Nôtre. This remarkable labyrinth boasted thirty-nine fountains each illustrating one of Aesop's fables and accompanied by verses from Isaac de Benserade.
