Produced during a period of profound creative and political synergy between the two artists-just months before the inception of Guernica-this volume is a hallmark of Guy Lévis Mano's aesthetic of restrained modernist typography. The work features a portrait and four full-page illustrations by Picasso masterfully integrated into the text. The bindings are tight and square showing only minimal shelf handling wear. Internally the text block is clean with even age-toning consistent with the tinted Alfa paper stock. Notably the original glassine wrapper is present and has been preserved separately to prevent the common acidic transfer or 'ghosting' to the wrappers. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE -- Les Yeux fertiles is more than a poetry collection; it is a document of a friendship that defined the 20th-century Parisian avant-garde. By 1936 Éluard and Picasso were inextricably linked in their opposition to the rising tide of Fascism. The 'Fertile Eyes' of the title refer to the transformative power of the Surrealist gaze. This G.L.M. edition is highly prized by collectors for its 'book-as-object' quality where the white space of the page is as vital as the ink of Picasso's drawings. With the publisher's original rhodoÃ¯d case. A gorgeous fine copy bright and fresh. Now housed in a custom clamshell box. Eluard wrote the poem during the German occupation of France in 1942; it was originally published in the clandestine book of poetry PoÃ©sie et vÃ©ritÃ© 1942 and later printed in leaflet form and parachuted over occupied territories by the thousands by the British Royal Air Force. LibertÃ© became a symbol of the RÃ©sistance under the oppression of Vichy and the German occupation. Eluard himself said of his stirring ode to freedom â€œI thought of revealing at the end the name of the woman I loved and for whom this poem was intended. But I quickly realized that the only word I had in mind was the word LibertÃ©. Thus the woman I loved embodied a desire greater than her. I confounded it with my most sublime aspiration and this word LibertÃ© was itself in my whole poem only to eternalize a very simple will very daily very apt that of freeing oneself from the occupation.â€ This edition was commissioned as a tribute to Eluard just after his death. The publisher Pierre Seghers asked LÃ©ger to illustrate the poem and he designed this remarkable â€œpoÃ¨me-objetâ€ in tribute to his friend. The bright pochoirs were printed by Albert Jon. A total of 212 copies were printed with twelve on canvas hand-illustrated by LÃ©ger himself; 200 on Auvergne paper and an additional twenty-six lettered copies â€œtirÃ©s pour les divers artisans de ce poÃ¨me-objet.â€ This is letter â€˜Aâ€™ of the twenty-six copies complete with the publisherâ€™s rhodoÃ¯d case which is lettered on the spine. The case is rare and not often seen. Also included is the original invitation card for the presentation of the book on October 23 1953 at the Galerie Louis CarrÃ©.
