Manuscript presentation on the front fly-leaf "For Charles Greville Esq. / From the Author." The recipient is probably the father of the famous political diarist, Charles Cavendish Fulke Greville (1794-1865). Also with the small printed bookplate of DeWitt Miller, Cross River, Westchester County, NY. DeWitt Miller (born in 1857) was a very famous book collector and public lecturer. This edition is almost identical to Baretti's 'Easy Phraseology for the use of Young Ladies'. The main difference is that it was issued without the Preface written by Baretti's intimate friend, Samuel Johnson. Baretti (1719-1789) was a remarkable character, whose tale cannot be told in this space - except to say that he was a warmly embraced member of Johnson's circle. In 1875, Matthias Bedrossian undertook to update earlier Armenian dictionaries, and he succeeded in producing a completely reworked Armenian-English dictionary. The most flourishing period of Venetian Armenians was in the 16th and 17th centuries, especially when Julfa and New Julfa merchants were based in the city. During the same period, Venice also became one of the most important Armenian publishing centers. It was in Venice (1512) that the first Armenian book was published by Hagop Meghabard. Until the founding of the Mekhiterists' printing press in San Lazzaro, there were 19 Armenian printing presses in Venice. (Source: Keghart). 1921226251921. Indigenous Language Tozzer Alfred M. A Maya Grammar with Bibliography and Appraisement of the Works Noted. Cambridge Massachusetts: Peabody Museum of American Archaeology and Ethnology Harvard University 1921. First edition first printing. Issued as Papers of the Peabody Museum of American Archaeology and Ethnology Harvard University Vol. IX. Original printed wrappers. 301 pages. 8vo.

A foundational study in Maya linguistics by Alfred Marston Tozzer 1877-1954 Harvard archaeologist anthropologist and one of the earliest U.S. scholars to systematically study Maya language and culture. Drawing upon his fieldwork in Yucatán Chiapas Tabasco and northern Guatemala during the early 1900s Tozzer compiles and analyzes Maya grammar in a structured form comparable to Latin models with extensive sections on phonetics syntax and verb classification. His preface acknowledges the assistance of leading anthropologists including Franz Boas and F.W. Putnam as well as the support of Charles P. Bowditch described as "that greatest of all friends of Maya research." The text includes not only grammar and syntax but also a comprehensive bibliography with appraisal of earlier works positioning this as both a reference and historiographical study of Maya scholarship. The work remains a cornerstone in the field of Mesoamerican linguistics particularly for its attempt to codify Maya languages using comparative methods. Tozzer's systematic treatment reflects the early 20th-century intersection of archaeology and philology and the book is still cited in modern scholarship for its detailed documentation of dialects and grammatical processes. The volume embodies the Peabody Museum's central role in shaping American anthropology and the academic study of Indigenous cultures of the Americas. Wear to wrappers and some pages frayed or uncut some pencil markings to cover and first few pages otherwise clean. Overall very good condition. An important first edition of a landmark in Maya studies scarcely found on the market crucial for institutions collecting in linguistics anthropology and Latin American history. unknown

189376783Santee Agency: A. L. Riggs 1893. First edition. Twelvemo 4 3/8 x 5 5/8 inches. 17 1; 10 pp. Respectively; Life of Lincoln and Aesop. Publisher's plain stiff wrappers lettered on the front. Some minor foxing to top edge of front wrapper else and exceptionally clean copy."The Reverend Alfred L. Riggs a Congregational missionary founded the Santee Normal Training School in 1870. The primary purpose of the school was to provide training and education to members of the Santee Sioux Tribe who had been exiled from their ancestral home in Minnesota following the Sioux uprising of 1862. The Tribe was first placed on a reservation at Crow Creek Dakota Territory. When this location proved poor for farming purposes with little available timber it was determined to relocate the Santee on the Niobrara River in northern Knox County Nebraska. In the summer of 1866 the Santee were moved to Nebraska accompanied by the missions of the Episcopal Church and the American Board of Foreign Missions. Under the direction of the Reverend Riggs the Santee Normal Training School became a leader in educational work among the Indians. Its graduates included ministers missionaries teachers nurses and engineers as well as farmers and blacksmiths. Many students came to Santee from other reservations throughout the Great Plains area. At one time the institution boasted 18 buildings and 480 acres of land and enrollment exceeded 200. Courses offered included history literature physics chemistry mineralogy zoology botany mathematics music and art. Instruction was also offered in vocational fields such as agriculture carpentry and home economics" Nebraska Historical Society.Riggs believed wholeheartedly that the Native Americans should assimilate and to this end he required them to be in Western garb speak English and have their hair cut in an acceptable manner. But he also and oddly believed in the retention of the Dakota language. Thus numerous items were printed in that language at the Santee Press. This was important as it gave the students something of their own even within the establishment. It is reported that translating from English to Dakota was an onerous task not undertaken lightly. The translator of the Lincoln part. James W. Garvie was just one such graduate of the Santee Normal School. He later joined the faculty at the Santee Normal Training School as the printing instructor. There he encourage his students to translate and publish in the Dakota language. Later along with Charles and John Eastman He fought for the restoration of their people’s annuity payments following the Dakota War of 1862. In the following years Garvie traveled to Washington D.C. thirteen times to represent his tribe in front of Congress before finally securing the payments in 1924. A. L. Riggs unknown
