Bindings present quite well despite some minor abrasions to the leather and a chipped head of the spine to the first volume; contents are heavily foxed and toned throughout; early 20th century owner name in pencil on half titles early owner's wax stamp monogram on each title page. <br /> <br /> Manual of diplomatic customs procedures and formulas apparently published for the market in newly independent Latin America where diplomatic relations with foreign powers were just beginning. This may well have been the standard manual for Latin America's first ambassadors and consuls in Europe. The two of three volumes present cover such diverse topics as diplomatic missions secret missions types of diplomatic agents credentials public behavior prerogatives e.g. immunity ceremonies length and ending of missions correspondence acts of abdication declarations of war and many other matters. Includes fifteen hundred illustrations plus photographs color maps of the newest acquisitions and color plates of the flags of all nations medals insignia etc. A quite lavish publication full of turn-of-the-last-century American bravado. Greenish blue cloth lettered and decorated in gilt 320 642 pages plus addenda fully indexed. The books measure approximately 17" x 12" and weigh nearly twenty pounds. Some external wear and rubbing mainly at the corners and spine ends very short vertical tear to the lower spine edge of volume II front hinge of volume I lightly cracked cosmetic rather than structural other hinges good bindings sound two pages in volume I detached but present pages clean and free from names or other markings maps and plates very good. Publisher's shell patterned blue cloth stamped in gilt. First 40 or so pages lightly damp stained around edges and with rippling. Spine gilt worn away corners bumped still a very good sound and complete copy. <br /> <br /> Very uncommon technical treatise on dress making by F. Marti de Gili who is described on the title page as the Founder and Director of the Barcelona Women's Technical Institute and contributor to European and American fashion magazines. The book is copiously illustrated with over 1300 drawings and patterns all new and original. <br /> <br /> OCLC listings seem to indicate this book was published under various titles and likely heavily revised each time to keep up with the fashion between 1935 and 1962. There are perhaps 10-12 holdings in total for the various titles and we find no holdings for this 1940 edition. Lopez and Co unknown

Previous owner's name one G Harrison possibly a member of one of the 1st family of VA present ot the half-title page. Text is clean and free of marks. Binding tight and solid. Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre also called Bernardin de St. Pierre 19 January 1737 Le Havre 21 January 1814 Éragny Val-d'Oise was a French writer and botanist. Boards scuffed and worn joints splitting cracking to paper over spine bookplate to pastedown of first volume scattered foxing stain to upper spine corner of last 20 or so pages in 4th volume. A rare full-margined copy in original boards. <br/><br/>The masterwork of the Spanish priest and historian Juan Antonio Llorente 1756-1823. At time of publication Llorente had been living in France for a number of years - having identified with the French Bonaparte when the alliance between Spain and France collapsed in 1808.
