Thiers Was A Key Figure In The July Revolution Of 1830 Which Overthrew King Charles X In Favor Of The More Liberal King Louis Philippe And The Revolution Of 1848 Which Overthrew The July Monarchy And Established The Second French Republic. He Served As A Prime Minister In 1836 And 1840 Dedicated The Arc De Triomphe And Arranged The Return To France Of The Remains Of Napoleon From Saint-Helena. He Was First A Supporter Then A Vocal Opponent Of Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte Who Served From 1848 To 1852 As President Of The Second Republic And Then Reigned As Emperor Napoleon Iii From 1852 To 1871. When Napoleon Iii Seized Power Thiers Was Arrested And Briefly Expelled From France. He Then Returned And Became An Opponent Of The Government. Following The Defeat Of France In The Franco-Prussian War Which He Opposed Thiers Was Elected Chief Executive Of The New French Government And Negotiated The End Of The War. When The Paris Commune Seized Power In March 1871 Thiers Gave The Orders To The Army For Its Suppression. At The Age Of Seventy-Four He Was Named President Of The Republic By The French National Assembly In August 1871. His Chief Accomplishment As President Was To Achieve The Departure Of German Soldiers From Most Of French Territory Two Years Ahead Of Schedule. Opposed By The Monarchists In The French National Assembly And The Left Wing Of The Republicans He Resigned On 24 May 1873 And Was Replaced As President By Patrice De Macmahon. When He Died In 1877 His Funeral Became A Major Political Event; The Procession Was Led By Two Of The Leaders Of The Republican Movement Victor Hugo And Léon Gambetta Who At The Time Of His Death Were His Allies Against The Conservative Monarchists. Thiers Was Also A Notable Popular Historian. He Wrote The First Large Scale History Of The French Revolution In 10 Volumes Published 1823-1827. Historian Robert Tombs States It Was "A Bold Political Act During The Bourbon Restoration.And It Formed Part Of An Intellectual Upsurge Of Liberals Against The Counter-Revolutionary Offensive Of The Ultra Royalists." He Also Wrote A Twenty-Volume History Of The Consulate And Empire Of Napoleon Bonaparte Histoire Du Consulat Et De L'empire. In 1834 He Was Elected To The Académie Française. Exterior shows some spotting and toning with the worst issue is some tears around the spine edges. The top has a tear of about an inch the bottom has a larger tear along the spine edge that measures about 3 inches on the front cover with a smaller tear on the back. The string held binding is still intact in the pages are clean with the exception of some light foxing. There are no signatures or bookplates no handwriting no library markings none of the interior text pages have tears. This is a very rare government publication in the only date present is on the last page which states October 1879. <br/> <br/> Government Printing Office paperback

Good on lightly-aged paper with thin neat strip of paper mount at head of third page. The sense of humour for which the St John's Wood Clique was known is reflected in the letter which begins: 'Marks Storey and I have just returned from Paris to which dissolute city we went to see the "Salon" and after a hard course of study of pictures frescoes elaborate "menus" at Champeaux and female costume reduced to its simplest form at Offenbach's Theatre - where it chiefly consists of a belt with a few small coins hanging about here we are home again - to Virtue Simplicity and Work!' He is sorry to be late replying: Horsley's friend's drawing is a good one and he has 'many friends better able than myself to advise him'. 'The sending in is to-morrow and so good luck to him - I am sure he thoroughly deserves it.' Calderon writes that he and his colleagues were all very sorry to learn the cause of Horsley's absence from the last meeting: 'it was badly attended - besides yourself - Ward and Leighton were absent - but very interesting as Cope brought forward his motion'. Calderon has 'seriously studied the "lighting" at the Salon' and wants to 'try it in one room here'. He ends by asking: 'Will you back me up' On letterhead of 9 Marlborough Place, St John's Wood, NW. 1967219201967. The aftermath of the Puerto Rican civil unrest in East Harlem New York City during the summer of 1967. Two silver gelatin press release photographs dated July 25 and August 1 1967. Verso captions from the Associated Press AP identify the location as Spanish Harlem and note the events as part of the broader wave of urban uprisings that swept the U.S. in the mid-1960s. Each measure 7" x 11" and 8" x 8.5". One image shows a Puerto Rican man hauling a charred bed frame through the courtyard of a burned-out tenement building remnants of the arson and destruction that spread during the riot. In the background another figure walks past scorched debris and cracked brick walls. The second photo shows a family-including a young girl clutching a doll in a box-standing amidst broken storefronts and twisted metal grates a poignant contrast of innocence amid devastation. Both images underscore the human cost of systemic neglect and urban disinvestment in New York's working-class Puerto Rican neighborhoods. The 1967 East Harlem riot broke out on July 23 sparked by deep frustrations over racism poverty inadequate housing and police brutality-conditions that mirrored unrest in other urban centers like Newark and Detroit the same summer. In Spanish Harlem tensions boiled over after a series of confrontations between Puerto Rican youth and police igniting days of violence looting and arson. Though the mainstream press often depicted these events as senseless riots Puerto Rican activists and scholars later framed them as acts of resistance against colonial-style governance and systemic disenfranchisement. As historian Johanna Fernández notes the period was marked by the emergence of a radical Puerto Rican consciousness which would soon fuel movements like the Young Lords Party founded in 1969 that demanded community control police accountability and dignity for working-class Boricuas. Both photos are in very good condition with minor edge wear and light editorial markings and stamps on verso. Typewritten AP captions and editorial hand-annotations remain intact and legible. A rare and powerful visual document of Puerto Rican resistance during one of the most turbulent periods of 20th-century American urban history these images offer primary evidence of the socioeconomic injustices that fueled revolt and the resilience of New York's Puerto Rican community in the face of abandonment and repression. unknown
