193711781Cedar Rapids Iowa: Parnassius Press 1937. 1st Edition . Soft cover. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 46 pages. Limited edition of 500 copies. Brown wrappers very minor edgewear and spotting to cover. Written by Loren E. Hintz who used his mother's birth name "Baum" as his pen name. Hintz was born in 1917 and grew up in Iowa on a farm. These poems were written when Loren was a teenager who was very involved with Ernest Thompson Seton's Woodcraft Youth movement. Loren spent several summers at Seton Village near Santa Fe and was deeply influenced by Seton's naturalist philosophy and his respect for indigenous people. Author Howard Clark Brown aka Toykania was an instructor at Seton Village who also influenced Loren's juvenilia. Both Loren and Baum came from Charles City Iowa. Paal Batab Loren's Woodcraft name seems to be the faux Indigenous name of a fictional hero in a series of dime novels popular with boys in the 1920's. As an adult Loren worked for the W.P.A. as a recreation coordinator. He enlisted at the start of WWII and earned his pilot's wings. He was sent to Europe in Oct. 1944 as a P-47 Pilot. Loren's plane was shot down on April 21 1945 by retreating German troops. It crashed into an Italian farm field. Remains excavated at the time were buried in the American Battle Monuments Commission Florence American Cemetery.

Parnassius Press paperback
