The pages and cover are plain paper bound in traditional Japanese book binding style known as "fukuro-toji" which means "pouch binding" secured by silk string ties in "X" pattern Yamato toji binding. Book has light edge wear and light foxing on the cover. Interior is clean tight and unmarked. Woodblock illustrations are full page and double page with small bit of color decoration on some of the text pages. Unpaginated 12 double pages plus covers. Text is in English. No copyright stated; the copyright page is in Japanese except for words :Copyright Reserved". Research suggests with the title on the cover written in English this is a second edition ca1880's. Publisher Kobunsha's address was 2 Minami Saegi-cho Tokyo from 1885 to May 1889. Also the publisher used the name "Kobunsha" until Dcember 1890 when "Hasegawa" began to be used . Kobunsha Paperback

Hardcover inscribed and signed by the author on the second front end page: "To illegible name from Thos Dunn English. A blind man's autograph.". Dr. English lost most of his eyesight from his literary exertions before his death in 1902. Blue cloth boards with gilt on text and spine. Exterior shows scuffing and soiling along with edge and corner bumps/wear top 1 inch of spine has a couple scuffs as well as a small tear. The interior binding of the text portion of the pages are good as is the front hinge though the rear hinge is starting to open at the top 2 inches. Rear pastedown also has a small spot to the paper. Pages are toned due to age and there is some very minor scattered foxing present. There are also a couple pages that had small corner folds which have been straightened out. Minor chipping is also present on a few scattered pages. <br/> <br/> Published by Private Subscription hardcover
