Mary Anne Thompson Clarke (1776-1852) became the mistress of Prince Frederick Augustus (1763-1827) Duke of York in 1803, while he was Commander-in-Chief of British forces. He set her up in a fashionable residence, but failed to supply the funds necessary to support their lavish lifestyle. In 1809, a national scandal arose when Clarke testified before the House of Commons that she had sold army commissions with the Duke of York's knowledge. Frederick was forced to resign from his position. A select committee was appointed by the British House of Commons to enquire into the matter. The parliament eventually acquitted the Duke of having received bribes by 278 votes to 196. He nevertheless resigned because of the high tally against him. In 1811, after it was revealed that Clarke had received payment from the Duke's disgraced chief accuser, Gwyllym Lloyd Wardle (1762?-1833), the Prince Regent reappointed the now exonerated Duke of York as commander-in-chief. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! With the engraved Railroad Bookplate of Robert Heysham Sayre, South Bethlehem, PA 1900 (the long-time President of the Pennsylvania & New York Railroad). Richard Harris Barham (1788-1845), was an English novelist, humorous poet, and priest in the Church of England. He was very much better known by his nom de plume - Thomas Ingoldsby. From Wiki: "on the establishment of Bentley's Miscellany in 1837 he began to furnish the series of grotesque metrical tales known as The Ingoldsby Legends. These became very popular, were published in a collected form and have since passed through numerous editions. In variety and whimsicality of rhymes these verses have hardly a rival since the days of Hudibras. But beneath this obvious popular quality there lies a store of solid antiquarian learning, the fruit of patient enthusiastic research, in out-of-the-way old books, which few readers who laugh over his pages detect." Even with the dampstain on the plates, this is a very attractive set of the fifth edition of this classic work. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! JUN5 SETS SW2

Johannes Herr (1781-1850), was the founder of the Reformed Mennonite Church. Around 1800 his father (Francis) was expelled from the Mennonite Church in West Lampeter Township, Lancaster County, PA. Francis began to conduct religious services in his home as a lay brother. He died in 1810, leaving a family of eight children, none of whom had been baptized as members in any church. Among those who associated with him in his lay services were Abraham Landis and David Buckwalter, both of whom had withdrawn from the Mennonite Church. After Francis Herr's death the meetings continued and his son John was asked to lead the services, although he was not yet baptized. In a meeting on 30 May 1812, at John Herr's home John was elected pastor and bishop, and Abraham Landis was elected to baptize him. Herr in turn baptized Landis and Abraham Groff, Groff being elected deacon. Soon thereafter Abraham Landis was chosen preacher, followed by John Groff as preacher. In 1812 the first meetinghouse was dedicated, called Longenecker's. John became a vigorous leader of the new group. He traveled widely, especially to Western New York and Ontario, where congregations of his group were established. Scarce First Edition. PA SHELF 011A
