Louÿs discusses the gradual recovery of his first wife Louise de Heredia daughter of José María de Heredia; shares some news about a lawsuit against him; and discusses politics Louÿs expresses concern that a recent strike rather than help the Socialists will hasten France´s slide towards the right. Signed with Louÿs' monogram. One folded page with address postmarks and stamp on verso. In very good condition. Louÿs and his half-brother Georges wrote each other on an almost daily basis until Georges' death in 1917. One thousand of these letters--but not this one--were published in "Mille lettres inédites de Pierre Louÿs à Georges Louis 1890-1917" Paris 2002. Eloquent letter testifying to Pierre Louÿs' fragile health in the last years of his life: ""Vous me retrouvez en pleine crise d'emphysème. Médecins. Ventouses. Potions. Régime. Intertitude chaque jour sur la journée du lendemain."" You find me in the midst of an emphysema crisis. Doctors. Cupping. Potions. Regimen. Uncertainty each day about the next day. The letter also reveals the writer's passion for dramaturgy notably through the mention of Gustave Quinson then director of the Palais-Royal theatre. ""Voulez-vous être tout à fait gentil Envoyez-moi d'abord votre livret que je suis si curieux de connaître."" Would you be so kind First send me your libretto which I am so curious to know. unknown

"Aphrodite: Ancient Manners" is a description of courtesan life in Alexandria by French poet and writer Pierre Louÿs 1870 - 1925 who is best known for the classical and lesbian themes in some of his writings. The book became an instant success when in was published in 1896 and became the subject of several editions including this limited edition accompanied by the five lovely and "piquant" illustrations by Antoine Calbet. Calbet was known for his colorful youthful somewhat risqué pictures of women had won medals at several of the Paris Salons 1863 1880 1891 1892 1893 and the Paris World Exhibition in 1900. He was a prolific illustrator of books Zola Barres and magazines and his best know commission is probably the luxurious Train Bleu restaurant at Paris's Gare de Lyon where he painted delightful panels depicting the cities of Nice Evian Nîmes and Grenoble. Delicately touched with color highlights. Abundant nudity. The signatures are enclosed in stiff cream colored wraps printed in red. Protected by a tan paper-covered hardbound chemise with spine titling and that inside a tan paper-covered slipcase with brown cloth framing the opening. The slipcase and chemise show signs of fingering and the bottom of the slipcase is beginning to split on one side but the internal materials are fine and bright.
