Hardcover. no dust jacket shelfwear to bottom edges with some exposure of boards spine lettering and illustration heavily rubbed otherwise a good sound copy. color plates chapter-head drawings Mild erotica originally published in 1898 and best remembered today if at all because of its delirious 1935 film adaptation THE DEVIL IS A WOMAN directed by Josef von Sternberg and starring Marlene Dietrich and Lionel Atwill. The illustrations color frontispiece 9 color plates with tissue-guards intact a title-page drawing and chapter-head line drawings feature lots of nekkid ladies Ms. Tice's specialty and bear captions along the lines of "She smiled with her legs as she spoke with her torso." This is stated on the limitation page to be one of "1250 copies of which 990 are for America." Although one is usually well-advised to take the professed numbers on these vintage-erotica items with a grain of salt what makes this one especially interesting though is that instead of a number written into the blank space below the statement the single word "presentation" is inked; in addition on the half-title page is a 3-inch-tall original drawing of yet another nudie that is SIGNED by Clara Tice. With a striking and intellectually playful pictorial bookplate on the front pastedown juxtaposing religious and symbolic imagery in a manner curiously - and perhaps deliberately - at odds with the erotic subject of the work. A superb copy.

A highly desirable American private-press edition of Aphrodite the scandalous first novel of Pierre Louÿs originally published in 1896. Set in Hellenistic Alexandria the novel traces the destructive and obsessive relationship between the courtesan Chrysis and the sculptor Démétrios whose passion ultimately drives him to theft and murder.

Upon publication the work became an immediate sensation in France reportedly running through dozens of printings within months while its frank sensuality ensured controversy abroad; early English-language editions circulated privately and attracted the attention of American censors remaining difficult to obtain in the United States for many years.

This edition is distinguished by the etchings of Clara Tice the so-called "Queen of Greenwich Village" whose witty and unabashedly sensual style brought her considerable notoriety and popularity in the 1920s. The present copy one of the specially colored examples represents the most desirable state of the edition the hand-applied color heightening the immediacy and charm of Tice's distinctive interpretations.

A particularly appealing example combining the allure of a once-suppressed modern classic with the lively graphic work of one of America's most celebrated bohemian illustrators. Quartos 6 volumes bound in full red pebbled morocco with gilt titles and tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised bands elaborate gilt ruling to the panels top edges gilt pictorial endpapers with 12 original colored lithographs per volume by Brenot and others. Limited edition one of 1572 sets produced. In near fine condition. Exquisitely illustrated. Through his writings Louÿs sought to "express pagan sensuality with stylistic perfection." Perhaps his best-known work Les Chansons de Bilitis is a collection of erotic essentially lesbian poetry first published in 1894. The work is considered a pseudotranslation as Louÿs claimed it to be his translation of the original poems of Bilitis a courtesan of Sappho in Ancient Greece. The work was eventually exposed as a literary fraud this did little however to taint its literary value as an open celebration of lesbian sexuality. Les Editions de l'Ibis hardcover
