189939327Nice 1899. AN ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL UNPUBLISHED LETTER FROM PIERRE LOUS TO HIS BROTHER THE DIPLOMAT GEORGES LOUIS. Dated February 6 1899. 4 pages two conjugate leaves; about 400 words in very legible script written in Louÿs' characteristic purple ink. Louÿs begins by reminding his brother that today is the twentieth anniversary of the onset of their mother's terminal illness. He goes on to discuss his travels in the South of France; his anger over a publisher's rejection letter; his troubles with money which he discusses with good humor knowing his beloved older brother will bail him out; and his recent purchase of a Malagasy-French dictionary in preparation for his trip to Madagascar. He goes on to discuss his love for the Malagasy language giving several examples of words he finds charming and to tell his brother how much he misses him. Finally he reveals that he will depart for Algiers in the morning a decision made while writing this letter. Signed "Pierre". In perfect condition. Louÿs and his half-brother Georges wrote each other on an almost daily basis until Georges' death in 1917. One thousand of these letters--but not this one--were published in "Mille lettres inédites de Pierre Louÿs à Georges Louis 1890-1917" Paris 2002. This was one of the great literary correspondences of the age and this is an especially interesting letter.

unknown

Some chipping to wrappers a few spots of soiling. 106 pp. Mimeograph of a typed manuscript. Small 4to. An unrecorded item authorship unknown. The spurious association of Constance Garnett as translator and George Saintsbury whose name is applied to the end of the introduction dated 1927 with this volume is an amusing provocation as is the publisher's note found on p 6: "This book has been printed in so small a format to make it easy to hold it in one hand. Need we say more" Fourteen stories plus the preface. n.p. unknown

Hardcover. quarter-bound light blue cloth over marbled boards; gilt-stamped lettering and small nude figure illustration on spine; no dust jacket a lovely copy with just the slightest wear to the extremities including a very slight exposure of the board at the lower tips; some of the pages remain unopened. B&W etchings A nice copy of this desirable edition of the French poet's scandalous first novel originally published in 1896 which recounts the tortured relationship of the courtesan Chrysis and the sculptor Démétrios the latter driven to commit theft and ultimately murder by the former's resistance to his desire for her. A sensation in France it was reported to have already had 35 printings within a few months of its first publication an English translation was printed in Paris as early as 1900 but the book drew the attention of American censors and customs officials and remained difficult to obtain in the U.S. for many years. When Louys's brother-in-law lectured at Harvard in 1900 one prominent and widely-syndicated literary critic opined that "he ought to be ashamed of the relationship" because "Aphrodite" was "written printed and bound nastiness and unadulterated filth." Eventually a theatrical adaptation had a five-month run in New York in late 1919 and early 1920 and got the bluenoses' panties in a bunch all over again. The nekkid-lady illustrations in this edition "limited to 650 copies of which which 600 copies are for sale" this being no. 499 are by Clara Tice the so-called "Queen of Greenwich Village"; this was one of a dozen or so books Tice illustrated during the 1920s when she was at the height of her fame and in great demand as a magazine and theatrical illustrator. . "Aphrodite: Ancient Manners" is a description of courtesan life in Alexandria by French poet and writer Pierre Louÿs 1870 - 1925 who is best known for the classical and lesbian themes in some of his writings. The book became an instant success when in was published in 1896 and became the subject of several editions including this privately-printed edition accompanied by the a fanciful nude by Clara Tice 1888 - 1973 whom Vanity Fair dubbed "The Queen of Greenwich Village". Tice drew racy illustrations at a time when ladies did not engage in such things and when Anthony Comstock's Society for the Suppression of Vice was very active. Tice attracted their unwanted attention for one of her early exhibitions at Polly's Restaurant in Greenwich Village in 1915 and it helped to jump-start her career. According to The New York Times 27 June 1920 she was the first woman in Greenwich village to bob her hair. Tice also created a cartoon strip and posters and she is included in the New York Dada Movement. Privately Printed unknown
