Residue from former book plate to front paste down spine-sunned overall near fine in very good lightly edge worn and mildly soiled slipcase. Lithographs by Lynd Ward. THE REVELATION OF A SHORT STORY MAGICIAN

Originally written between 1904 and 1909 and published here for the first time in English Nocturnes reveals the quieter magic of Mann’s short-form craft. Known for his intellectually rigorous and at times dense novels—Buddenbrooks The Magic Mountain—these three novellas are both penetrating and unexpectedly accessible. Through portraits of the German bourgeoisie a symbolic train wreck and Schiller’s creative paralysis Mann returns to his enduring themes: the seduction of death the burden of intellect and the disillusionment of modern life. Yet in the final moments of A Weary Hour a flicker of transcendence remains: “And from his soul from music and idea new works struggled upward to birth. ringing and shimmering and giving hint of their infinite origin.â€

Limited to 990 signed and numbered copies of which this is 558. Signed by Mann on the limitation page. Equinox Cooperative Press unknown
