18127'Kenwood Tuesday afternoon July 28 1793 '. 2pp. 4to. Bifolium. In good condition lightly aged. Addressed on reverse of second leaf to 'D. of Portland'. The date '93' has been added in a contemporary hand beside 'July 28'. Knowing Portland he feels that 'Dr Campbells Interests cannot be safer' than in his hands. He is transmitting a letter of resignation to be used whenever Portland thinks proper. 'I know you will agree with me in thinking that theh Distinguished Manner in which Dr Campbell has filled the Station he now offers to resign the Motives to his Resignation and his whole Conduct with regard to Dr Brown entitle Him to a liberal and handsome Pension fully adequate at least to all that He resigns.' Campbell 'cannot expect to enjoy His Pension long and it is surely just as well as wise to make Him comfortable for the Remainder of His day'. He understands that 'Mr Dundas' Henry Dundas 1742-1811 later 1st Viscount Melville has enquired about the 'best Mode of granting this Pension which will of course go pari passu with the Resignation'. He will call on Portland the following day. The subject of the letter may be the Church of Ireland clergyman and traveller Dr Thomas Campbell 1733-1795 remembered for his 1775 London diary describing his encounters with Dr Samuel Johnson. Portland was Prime Minister between 1807 and 1809. 'Kenwood Tuesday afternoon | July 28 [ 1793 ]'. unknown

200781098New York: Sentinel 2007. First Edition Stated First Printing Stated. Hardcover. Very good/Very good. xic 4 189 1 pages. Foreword by Rush Limbaugh. Preface by Sean Hannity. Index. Inscribed by the author on the half-title page. Thomas Dale DeLay born April 8 1947 is an American author and former politician who served as a member of the United States House of Representatives representing Texas's 22nd congressional district from 1985 until 2006. He was Republican Party House Majority Leader from 2003 to 2005. In 1994 he helped Newt Gingrich orchestrate the Republican Revolution which gave the Republicans the victory in the 1994 midterm election and swept Democrats from power in both houses of Congress putting Republicans in control of the House of Representatives for the first time in forty years. In 1995 he was elected House Majority Whip. DeLay was elected House Majority Leader after the 2002 midterm elections. In 2005 DeLay was indicted on criminal charges of conspiracy to violate election law by campaign money laundering in 2002 by a Travis County grand jury after he waived his rights under the statutes of limitations. He was convicted in January 2011 and sentenced to three years in prison but was free on bail while appealing his conviction. The trial court's judgment was overturned by the Texas Court of Appeals on September 19 2013 with a ruling that "the evidence in the case was 'legally insufficient to sustain DeLay's convictions'" and DeLay was formally acquitted. The State of Texas appealed the acquittal to the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals. On October 1 2014 the Court of Criminal Appeals affirmed the decision overturning DeLay's conviction. Derived from a review found on-line. The book is a combination autobiography and manifesto designed to settle political scores justify and defend DeLay's behavior and explain away all the charges against him. Its goal is to rally conservatives behind him to convince them that he is a victim of vicious liberal calumny and is a true and noble hero. The main theme of the book is introduced early on: "I have learned something about liberals. They are much like Communists. They believe they have to destroy you in order to win. . Liberals in Congress have no ideas that history hasn't disproved and this leaves them pursuing only power. To get that power they will destroy you - and if they can't destroy your message they will try to lock up the messenger. Congress today is plagued by the politics of personal destruction." The enemies include Nancy Pelosi Rahm Emanuel and Patrick Kennedy He also targets the Environmental Protection Agency. The Democrats in Congress though are the biggest villains. DeLay writes: "In 1996 ethics charges were lodged against me but of course they were dismissed. The same thing happened again in 1998. . The truth is that both these ethics charges and those to come as well as a lawsuit I would face in 1998 were all part of a carefully executed strategy by the Democrats." He hits Emanuel and Pelosi with ethics allegations. And he goes after Bill Clinton throughout interspersing attacks with laments about how his own opponents have perfected the politics of personal destruction against him. DeLay describes the secret of his political success: "I have often acquired power simply by taking the time to learn a process thoroughly. This is a key to understanding who I am. Benjamin Disraeli once said 'The secret of success is constancy of purpose.' My gift is this very constancy. Once I determine my goals I orchestrate the hours of my day to achieve them. I spend my time getting better at whatever skill I need to achieve them. This requires the fine art of self-education. I take a long look at the mechanisms in place - in politics pest control or life in general - and then I read and ask questions until I know the details of the process. . This is my brand of leadership a brand not based on looks or charm or brilliance but on hard work mastery of the details and constancy of purpose." This passage shows an admirable self-knowledge.
