Page ends dyed yellow. Solid binding extremities lightly rubbed small chip to upper spine end. Mild foxing throughout moderate toning to the two illustrated plates. Inscribed by one of the authors on the front free endpaper: "To the Revd Mr. Picton / from his friend / E.D. Mansfield." Scarce in original wrappers with a paper title label on the front cover. Most spine paper missing. There is a 1 1/4 inch horizontal tear on the front cover near the foot of the spine. The first four leaves are torn at the bottom corner with loss of text. This includes the title page with loss of the original date. The second leaf is the Preface and there is also loss of text on the front affecting the right-hand side of the bottom 7 lines. The back side of this leaf does not have text which is affected text ends at the top of the page. The third leaf is the Table of Contents. There is loss of the page numbers for Chapters IX and X at the bottom with no loss of text on the verso. Text of the book is complete. Benjamin Drake was the brother of noted frontier physician and author Daniel Drake. He was an author himself having published the first western short story. This title was republished in England and Germany to encourage emigration to Cincinnati. An early and important Cincinnati title. Scarce in wraps. Coyle 176.
