The new edition of this early eighteenth century work. Michel de Montaigne was one of the most significant philosophers of the French Renaissance. His Essais were originally written between 1570 and 1592 and the first collection were published in 1580. In uniform calf bindings. Externally worn. Severe loss to spines and extremities with heavy rubbing to boards and to the remainder of spines. All joints are tender. Both hinges to volume I are weak and may detach in postage. Front hinge to volume II is tender with cords showing with the rear hinge slightly strained but firm. Front hinge to volume III is tender with the rear hinge weak may detach in postage. Large crack centrally down the spine of volume III. Prior owner's signature to the recto of front endpaper S D Horton to C P Greenough. Another prior owner's signature to the verso of title page of all volumes. Title page to xxxii has separated from textblock. Binding to volume III is particularly weak between pages 264 and 265 where the binding has split and held by cords only. Otherwise internally generally firmly bound though strained in places. One of the finest sets of the complete writings of Montaigne every produced. The type-setting was done by hand at Edinburgh's Riverside Press using Arnold's hand-made paper specially made and watermarked by the Navarre Society. What sets Montaigne aside from the early classics of the Early Modern period was that his search for truth led him to constantly challenge his own mind. While he had read both the Greek and Roman classics as well as those of the Renaissance his vistas were the wide world looking beyond the limits of society religion and art to ideas that seem remarkably modern to today's reader. Harold Bloom reflecting at the end of his life on the great writers he had Shakespeare Montaigne Cervantes and Dante noting that it was their search for truth that gave us the greatest sense of freedom. The seventh edition "with very considerable amendments and improvements from the most elegant and accurate French edition of Peter Coste;" it is a revised version of Charles Cotton's translation. Three octavo volumes: 2841426; 460836; 446827 pp. In contemporary leather bindings with gilt stamped double-rule frames on sides the bindings lack spine labels and show moderate wear particularly at heels and crowns with some soiling/staining. The joints of volume one have hairline cracks. Text leaves are clean. However one leaf in volume one pp. 265-6 has along closed tear but without any loss of text. Each volume has the ownership signature of Parker Pillsbury as well as some occasional pencil notes or markings in the margins in volumes two and three. Parker Pillsbury 1809-1898 worked ceaselessly for human betterment over the course of his long life primarily as an abolitionist and women's rights activist. He edited The Herald of Freedom Concord New Hampshire in the 1840s and The National Anti-Slavery Standard New York NY in 1866 all while working as an abolitionist lecture agent for the New Hampshire Massachusetts and American anti-slavery societies. After the Civil War Pillsbury labored for Negro suffrage and was interested in temperance political reform international peace and women's rights. He served as vice-president of the New Hampshire Woman Suffrage Association and in 1865 helped draft the constitution of the American Equal Rights Association. Montaigne was rather decisive in his rhetoric and used various Ancient Greek Latin and Italian texts as examples and references such as Lucretius and Plutarch quotations. Montaigne himself stated that the goal of his essays was to describe man with 'utter frankness and honesty.' According to the scholar Paul Oskar Kristeller "the writers of the period were keenly aware of the miseries and ills of our earthly existence." Montaigne sought to break man down into his basic features which at the time was extreme volatility.
