Bound in 17th-century French speckled calf spines with raised bands and gilt tooling edges speckled red heavy rubbing with some chipping to spines; boards rubbed; some wear to text margins. PROVENANCE: Small ink stamps to title pages reading 'D. A. Lejay' spelling; bookplates in first two volumes bear the bookplate of celebrated collector Montgomery Evans II with his superb pictorial ex libris designed and illustrated by S.H. Sime illustrator of many works by Lord Dunsany volume I bears the pencilled note on front endpaper 'M.E. 1920' the bookplate in this volume has a long tear. I occasional spotting; publisher's boards original paper labels to spines uncut edges spines neatly restored very good.<br /> A handsome set in English and the publisher's original boards of this important work of French Renaissance thought by the humanist courtier Michel de Montaigne 1533-1592 which pioneered the essay-writing genre.<br /><br />The Essays marked the beginning of an important shift in European thought which took place at the beginning of the seventeenth century towards a philosophical scepticism that argued against the possibility of actual knowledge in the natural sciences ethics and theology. Montaigne was amongst the first to shake such fundamental aspects of Western thought as the belief in the superiority of man over animals or European civilisation over "Barbarianism" his approach best being summed-up in the famous epithet 'Que sais-je' 'What do I know'<br /><br />This translation was the final work which the English poet Charles Cotton 16301687 saw through the press. It immediately supplanted the edition by John Florio of 1603 and remained in print well into the twentieth century. The translation was made from the French edition of Pierre Coste 1668-1747.<br /> London, Printed for W. 160814790Paris: Chez Michel Niuelle. Good. 1608. First Edition Thus. Hardcover. Half-leather and boards. Engraved title has been laid down and has only the 1608 date and just the single publisher. The original title is missing 3/8" along the right margin. The Table Des Matieres at the end is complete. This 1608 edition was the first to include "Sommaire discours sur la vie de Michel Seigneur de Montaigne" and sidenotes summarizing the text. This copy is missing the portrait of Montaigne which appeared for the first time in this edition. Covers are quite worn cracking along the leather spine. Much chipping to the upper spine end and a chip to the lower spine. Some splitting along the exterior spine hinges. Corners are bumped and worn. Boards rubbed. Leather label on the spine is quite chipped affecting lettering. Bookplate to the front pastedown. Quite a tight copy and but for the portrait otherwise complete. Uniform full leather bindings with renewed spines likely 19th or 20th century rebinding with period-style tooling and spine labels. Pages have some staining age toning but no writing marks or tears. <br /> <br /> The inner cover has a name plate for Sir William Curtis 1st Baronet 1752–1829 a prominent English merchant banker shipowner and politician. He was Lord Mayor of London 1794–1795 and Member of Parliament for the City of London for nearly 30 years 1790–1818 and beyond in other constituencies. He was created a Baronet in 1802 by King George III and was well known for his philanthropy and influence in commercial expansion during the Napoleonic period. This is from his private library. All three volumes have the crest nameplate. <br /> <br /> Very nice 18th century English translation of this work which influenced so many of the thinkers of that time and up to the present. J.
