Illustrated with sixteen plates one of which is a frontispiece all steel engravings. Translated into English verse by various hands. With a life of the poet by Thomas Campbell. Part of the publisher's series "Bohn's Illustrated Library". With a contemporary bookplate and signature of G. Peabody Gardner noted in pencil as a Harvard student. A pleasing copy of Petrarch's literary oeuvre a highlight of medieval literature and poetry. Two cracks to the gutter in different spots of the textblock the binding remains tight and secure. Light foxing to the endpapers and pastedowns. The cloth is quite sharp and the copy's exterior presents beautifully. George Bell and Sons hardcover

Backstrip faded hinges cracked pages clean a good copy inscribed by the author.<br /> <br /> § First edition reverently inscribed by the author to Celia Clark a member of one of San Francisco's founding families wife of Charles Clark son of the Copper King and thus sister-in-law of the library founder William Andrews Clark Jr. The inscription reads "For Celia Clark this my own personal copy is inscribed with affection and humility by her devoted Joseph Auslander." Joseph Auslander 1897-1965 American poet was the Poet Laureate Consultant in English Poetry for the Library of Congress from 1937 to 1941. Celia Clark's sister Agnes Tobin was also a respected translator of Petrarch. unknown

Slipcase shows some rubbing scuffing and light discoloration as well as having a tear and discoloration on lower inside corner. Due volumi in 8° grande, legatura coeva in piena pelle, dorso a quattro nervi (tre piatti staccati, il quarto mancante del tutto), sguardie, al primo volume occhiello ed antiporta incisa in rame da Isaac Taylor con il primo incontro fra Laura e Francesco, frontespizi (firma a pennino dell'antico possessore), XXXII, 544, 560 pp.. La biografia del Cantore di Laura tradotta ed in parte riscritta ed ampliata da Susanna Dobson dal lavoro originale del Marchese De Sade, zio delll'autore di Justine e delle Centoventi Giornate di Sodoma. Come antefatto noto al colto ed all'inclito va citato che la dolce Laura era un'antenata di detti egregi scrittori e molto c'è di nuovo in questa biografia grazie alle ricerche fatte nell'archivio di famiglia. Il ritratto che ne emerge è a tutto tondo, estremamente efficace, ancorpiù reso corposo dallo spirito della traduttrice o meglio coautrice. Assolutamente piacevole ed interessante, quest'opera, ben impaginata e stampata su carta greve e nerbata, ha i soli difetti nella legatura. S'è voluto comunque presentarla per il grande interesse e per la scarsa reperibilità. In ogni caso, è possibile il restauro della stessa facendo mente al costo ed al tempo necessario. Preziosa prima edizione.
