1850145961850. . by N.P. Willis J.R. Lowell and R.W. Griswold. New York: J.S. Redfield 1850 Vol IV in 1856. 4 pp Vol I ads; 8 pp Vol IV ads. Original blind-stamped purple and blue-grey cloth. First Collected Edition of Poe's writings published beginning in the year following his sudden death at the age of 40. According to the Vol I note by Maria Clemm Poe's aunt and mother-in-law he had requested shortly before his death that Rufus Griswold act as literary executor and that N.P. Willis write "such observations upon his life and character as he might deem suitable.". This is the resulting work which she says is "published for my benefit" she had assigned her rights in it to Redfield for a fee. The first two volumes were issued together in December 1849 or January 1850. The first volume which includes a Poe portrait frontispiece consists of Poe's "Tales" -- including all those for which he is famous -- "The Gold Bug" "The Murders of the Rue Morgue" "The Black Cat" "The Pit and the Pendulum" "The Cask of Amontillado" "The Tell-Tale Heart" and so on; the second volume contains his verse such as "The Raven" "Lenore" "Annabel Lee" "The Conqueror Worm" and "Tamerlane." This pair is from the second printing determinable by the ads in Vol I and on page 46 of Vol II; these volumes are in Blanck's faded-purple binding "D" four filigree rules on spine volume number in gilt. Later in 1850 September a third volume THE LITERATI etc. -- including Griswold's infamous "Sketch" of Poe was issued; this copy is likewise in binding "D" but in blue-grey. Finally six years later a fourth and final volume including ARTHUR GORDON PYM was also issued -- Blanck's binding "H" here in purple specific for this volume but also used for 1853-1856 reprints of the earlier volumes. This set is generally in very good condition with minor wear at the extremities; the front endpaper is excised in Vols I II and III; Vol II has some soil on pages 22-27; and Vol IV has darkened page margins and a bit more edge-wear than the other volumes. 1870363564Philadelphia: Tyndale Mitchell & Co 1870. Third Edition. Pamphlet. Good. The third separate printing of The Raven following a Glasgow edition in 1869 listed as BAL 16216 but not seen and the illustrated version published by W. Jennings Demorest about July 1870 Demorest's Illustrated Monthly printed an illustrated version of The Raven in its May 1870 issue of the magazine; by July of that year Jennings Demorest was advertising the book version at 25 cents in wrappers and 50 cents in cloth. BAL 16213 also records an 1862 sheet music version.

This edition illustrated with four wood engravings by David Scattergood printed in black ink on a brown background appears to have been offered as a premium by an enterprising printer who sold the idea to a number of companies near the end of 1870. This version was issued by Tyndale Mitchell & Co. importers of china and stoneware from Europe. Johns Hopkins records a version from Singer Manufacturing and Brown has one from P. P. Hayes a silversmith in Poughkeepsie NY. A couple of years later the same sheets were sold to newspapers as carrier addresses which are also found with a variety of imprints.

Unlike the Singer and Hayes versions of this pamphlet Tyndale added a printed note to the inside front cover and dated it Christmas 1870.

A charming scarce and early version of Poe's most popular poem.

7 1 poem set to music pages. 5-3/4 by 8-7/8 inches. Gray wrappers printed in blue and brown; Greek-style urn graphic on the back cover. Christmas greeting reproduced from handwriting on inside front cover; Tyndale Mitchell add on inside back cover. Second American edition third overall Tyndale issue. Spine nearly split; wrappers with small areas of loss old water spots on the front cover but generally good. Scarce and fragile. VG/NF NO JACKET ISSUED Original brown cloth binding with mulit-colour image SILVER BIRD PALLAS and gilt lettering. Gilt foredges top side bottom. Very dark brown endpapers. Heavy buff stock. Seventeen illustrations by W. L.Taylor. Book in very good to near fine condition with slight wear to head and foot of spine. First thus. TINY NICK ON SPINE CVR It tells of a talking raven's mysterious visit to a distraught lover tracing the man's slow descent into madness. The lover often identified as being a student is lamenting the loss of his love Lenore. The raven sitting on a bust of Pallas the goddess of wisdom seems to further instigate his distress with its constant repetition of the word "Nevermore". The poem makes use of a number of folk and classical references. Poe claimed to have written the poem very logically and methodically. His intention was to create a poem that would appeal to both critical and popular tastes

e. p. Dutton NY hardcover
