This is the large paper library edition with 250 copies printed on Imperial Japanese paper this being set # 229. Volume 1 "Tales of Imagination" Volume 2 "Tales of Imagination and Humor"; Volume 3 "Tales of Humor"; Volume 4 "Arthur Gordon Pym"; Volume 5 "Miscellaneous Volume 6 "Life and Poems". A very attractive set. Poe 1809-1849 was an American writer editior critic and poet. He was known for his macabre and mysterious stories and poems. He is frequently credited with inventing detective fiction and science fiction genres. He died at age 40. Cause of death remains uncertain but speculation includes delirium tremens heart disease epilepsy syphilis meningitis carbon monoxide poising and rabies!!. Limited Edition. Blue Cloth. Hardcover with dust jacket. DJ in protective sleeve in good only condition with pieces missing from top and bottom of spine and edges. Original publishers black cloth binding with gilt lettering and decoration to spine and gilt titles and skeleton design to front board in very good condition with a little rubbing to top & tail of spine edges and tip of boards. Inside decorative end papers designed by Rackham with all pages and plates with black top edge in very good condition although there is an previous ink inscription to half title page and what looks like a front free end paper has been taken out. The book itself is a little cocked leaving the binding a little slack but still solid. Overall a good copy of a desirable edition in a scarce DJ. <br /><br /></p> George G. Harrap & Co. Tipped-in colour frontispiece and 7 colour plates 24 black and white plates all by Clarke. Original black cloth titles to spine gilt illustrated label to front board black endpapers top edge black. 1927 gift inscription to front endpaper. A few splits to spine ends extremities rubbed and bumped a little foxing to outer leaves a few gatherings unopened. A very good copy. hardcover

184931566Philadelphia: John Sartain & Co 1849. Hardcover. Very Good. Hardcover. Includes "A Valentine" on page 173 of Volume 4 and "The Bells" on page 304 of Volume 5. Also contains a review of Rufus Griswold's "Female Poets of America" on page 415. This is the first printing of "The Bells"; however "A Valentine" was originally printed in the Evening Mirror in 1846 under the title "To Her Whose Name is Written Below." Both volumes are bound together in three-quarter dark green leather with brown and black marbled paper covered boards titled in gilt on the spine. There are four raised bands ruled in gilt to the spine. There is a three inch split to the head of the front joint and it appears that the binding has been repaired amateurly at some point. Both interior hinges are cracked; however the boards and textblock remain firmly attached. Rubbing to boards with a few small open tears to the marbled paper on the rear cover. Wear to edges of the boards and corners. Spots of foxing and soiling to interior. Both volumes include numerous full page engravings some colored. The indexes for both volumes appear at the end of the book. Attractive despite the noted wear. Volume 4 has 416 pages; Volume 5 has 389 pages. PER/011118. John Sartain & Co hardcover
