184497122Philadelphia: Godey's Lady's Book 1844. 1844. Fair. THE FIRST APPEARANCE OF EDGAR ALLAN POE'S SHORT STORY "THOU ART THE MAN!" - Octavo 9-3/4 inches high by 6-1/4 inches wide. Disbound lacking the covers with but remnants of the spine. 138 text pages in all numbered from 145 through 284 illustrated with 6 engraved plates. The pagination of each issue is as follows: October consists of pages 145 through 192 illustrated with 2 engravings; November consists of pages 193-240 illustrated with 2 engravings; and the December issue consists of pages 241-250 and 253-284 illustrated with 2 engravings. Pages 251/2 are lacking from the December issue. Several page corners are creased and there is some occasional soiling throughout. There is minor dampstaining to the bottom edges of the pages with some heavier dampstaining near the rear. <p>The first appearance of Edgar Allan Poe's "Thou Art the Man!" which is sometimes called the first comic detective story here published on pages 219 through 224 of the November 1844 issue.<p>The editor of Godey's made at least one change in the text: "old fellow" for "old cock". Clean and unmarked within on strong paper only mildly age-toned and not foxed but there are helpful notations neatly printed in pencil from time to time on the lower margins of a t.p. or in margins of t.o.c.; inlaid is a list of authors who may have influenced Poe. Some volumes have elegant signature of original owner on front end page. Some gutters cracked and unfortunately scotch tape has been used to reinforce the leather spines which have still bright gilt lettering and floral decoration--the tape can be easily removed for skillful repair; some rubbing of leather corners; clean green boards have a little scuffing. Poe's story first appeared in Wide World magazine of London in 1919. It was then printed as a first separate by Brininstool in 1922 in a printing thought to be limited to 50-55 copies with no illustrations. This copy is Brininstool's second separate printing to which he added Poe's letter of March 5 1923 3 illustrations and changed "Death" to "Killing" in the title. The first separate is rare and this second separate very scarce. Light wear to the spine ends and covers lightly soiled else a very good copy of this very scarce and important first-hand account.
