Numbered C1-C10 in the series. All are in dust jackets except for Thoreau. The jackets show light edge wear with some heavier scuffing along the spine folds and occasional shallow chipping at the spine ends. A few are scuffed darkened or show signs of handling but overall the jackets remain very good clean and well preserved with fresh bright covers underneath. All volumes are from the same previous owner with an ink name to the front endpaper. All are first printings. Illustrated with woodcuts by Gertrude Hermes Robert Gibbings Theodore Naish Douglas Percy Bliss J. R. Biggs Gwen Raverat Helen Binyon Iain Macnab and Ethelbert White. A lovely Penguin set. Pages are very thick stock Each page contains a lovely illustration and a few lines of the poem the opposite side verso of each page is blank. This book was published after Poe's death. Contemporary quarter red moracco marbled paper boards with gilt tooling on the spine creating five compartments and gilt text reading "Magazines Vol. II." Illustrated plates with engravings and color artwork. Boards detached from the text block but present boards and spine worn a few plates are loose and laid in many pages are torn with some content being affected fair only. Contains "To - - -" by Edgar Allen Poe later titled "To Marie Louise Shew" in The Columbian Magazine - March 1848. As well as “The Blind Girl of Castel-Cuille" by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Sartain's Magazine Vol. VI.
