18419033<p>This is a 64 page section that has been extracted from Volume XIX of Graham's Lady's and Gentleman's Magazine from June to December 1841. This section includes the first appearance of "A Chapter on Autography" by EDGAR ALLAN POE - the essay is complete in 14 pages. Also included is a letter "To Edgar Allan Poe Esq." written in cipher code within a section titled "Secret Writing." In his "Autography" essay Poe analyzes the handwriting of various literary figures of his time to draw conclusions about their personalities and literary styles. Poe a noted literary critic combined graphology with literary analysis in the essay offering insights into the character of writers based on their handwriting samples. There are 67 autograph analyses in all each with a facsimile signature including John Greenleaf Whittier James Russell Lowell John Quincy Adams and Jared Sparks. The section contains two full-page engraved plates at the front followed by a full-page hand-colored fashion plate. Please note - no hardcovers are present; this is a section of 64 consecutive pages that have been removed from the original volume. Photos 11 and 12 show the front and back of the section.<br /><br />Condition:<br />This is a 64 page section that has been removed from the original volume. The pages are attached/bound along the spine - no pages are loose. The last page has pulled from the spine 3" down from the top. Occasional mild foxing to the pages; heavier foxing to one of the engravings at the front. A section of the tissue guard has torn away at the lower-outer corner of the tissue guard over one of the engravings at the front. Overall in Good condition.</p> George R. Graham
