An early reprinting of the Ingram Edition which effectively rescued Edgar Allan Poe's reputation both personal and literary from the clutches of Rufus Wilmot Griswold whose malicious portrait of his literary rival appeared in the first collected edition 1850 of Poe's work. Widdleton began publishing Poe's Works to take advantage of renewed interest generated by the dedication of the Poe Monument in Baltimore on November 18 1875. This printing was designated the "Library Edition" which is stamped in gilt on the spine heel of each volume. Octavo four volumes: clxxviii 395 1 blank 6 ads pp. 530 pp. iv 2 571 1 blank pp. 578 pp. with 5 plates and several textual facsimiles. Original brown cloth bindings with blind-stamped borders and decoration on the boards and gilt and black-stamped borders titling and decoration on the spines. A few leaves are unopened. Period previous owner's ink signature to a prefatory blank leaf in the first volume.
