Stefano Gradi (1613-1683), o anche Gradic, filosofo e scienziato croato, fu inviato precocemente da Ragusa a Roma, dove studiò in seminario e prese gli ordini secolari: nel 1661 divenne custode della Biblioteca Vaticana. In quest’opera Gradi si inserisce con veemenza nella discussione sul “probabilismo” etico, concetto di teologia morale messo a fuoco nel secolo precedente e abbondantemente dibattuto negli anni in cui viene pubblicata quest’opera. I probabilisti, in estrema sintesi, accettavano che una determinata norma morale potesse essere discussa in termini di probabilità della sua “verità”. Matematico per formazione e consuetudine, e quindi profondo conoscitore delle scienze esatte, Gradi si scontra con quanti, i probabilisti estremi, applicavano in modo secondo lui arbitrario dei concetti propri della geometria alla morale: pur essendo questo, in senso stretto, un libro di teologia morale, abbonda di riferimenti alla matematica e alle scienze, con precisi riferimenti a Castelli, Galileo, ecc., rivendicando un’autonomia delle scienze matematiche rispetto a quelle storiche e morali. La pubblicazione di questa “Disputatio” gli valse il sospetto di Giansenismo e il ritardo della sua nomina cardinalizia. Rilegato con “Oratio de eligendo Summo Pont. In this work Gradi get into the disputation about the ethic “probabilism”, a theological concept defined in the XVI Century and much discussed at his time. A matematician, Gradi substains the autonomy of sciences from history and moral studies. The publication of this “Disputatio” pulled him to be suspected of Jansenism. Fore-edge with 2-line title in neat (contemporary?) hand and with the ""Societas Jesu"" (i.e. the Jesuit Society) symbol in white to the otherwise red fore-edge. Internally a very ni8ce copy, with the occasional browning and spotting. A faint damp stain to top marging of some leaves. A small hole to top of title-page, far from affecting print. Last leaves with neat strenthening of blank upper corners, far from affecting text. Old (presumably 18th century) owner's name to title page: ""Ioan. Bey A. Vest."" Front free end-papers heavily annotated (presumably by this same owner, in Latin, Greek, and German. The annotations include and elaborate handwritten index, information about the edition, and references to the Greek sentences. Verso of last leaf and back end-papers also with notes. A few underlinings here and there. Woodcut ornamental title-border, woodcut vignettes, woodcut initials, numerous woodcut illustrations and diagrams in the text. Greek-Latin parallel-text. Contemporary marbled full calf boards, prettily rebacked in period style with gilt title-label, raised bands and gilt ornamentations to spine. During the re-backing, new end-papers have been inserted, but the original front end-paper , containing old owners' inscriptions, has been preserved and is still withbound. Three old owners' names to title-page, two of them crossed out. The title-page had been repaired at the outer margin, affecting three letters in the last three lines of the subtitle (To open a Method for rendering the/ SCIENCES more easy, useful, and/ compensious), namely the ""he"" in ""the"" and the ""d"" in ""and"" as well as part fo the double-ruled border, which has been drawn up again. The final leaf with a somewhat crode repair causing loss of some words towards the hinge. A small hole in A3, not repaired. A bit of brownspotting, mostly at beginning and end. With its flaws, still and overall acceptable copy of this extremely rare title. (10), 166 pp.

"Edition qui doit être préférée à celle de 1727-31, parce qu'elle contient, de plus que la première, cent cinquante lettres à sa famille, formant un cahier de 211 pages qui est placé à la fin du premier volume" (Brunet). "Ce recueil contient tous les ouvrages publiés de Bayle, hors le dictionnaire. Il comprend aussi tout ce qui avait été imprimé de la correspondance" (Delvolve, 'Pierre Bayle…', Bibliographie, p. 436). Selon le catalogue de la BnF, qui se fonde sur le matériel typographique, cette édition aurait été imprimée en France, probablement à Trévoux. Le volume IV renferme plusieurs illustrations sur bois dans le texte dont trois grandes représentations des systèmes planétaires de Ptolémée (p. 394), de Ticho-Brahé (p. 398) et Copernic (p. 401). Legatura piena pergamena coeva con titolo manoscritto al dorso. La raccolta comprende 5 serie d'incisioni: "Solitudo sive vita patrem...", 56 ff (num 1-56); "Oracolum Anachoreticum", 24 ff (num 57-80); "Sylvae Sacrae" ff.26 (num 81-109); "Solitudo sive vitae foeminarum Anachoritarum" ff 26 (num 110-135); "Vera effigies S. Francisci" ff. 26 ( num. 136-161). Seguono 3 ff. con l''indice alfabetico dei nomi degli anacoreti compresi in queste 5 serie. L'opera raffigura eremiti e santi ritratti nel loro ambiente naturale e durante momenti di devozione, alcuni sono tormentati da demoni o da creature mostruose. La quarta parte è interamente dedicata alle donne anacorete. Le raffigurazioni religiose sono arricchite da bellissimi paesaggi. Ogni incisione presenta, nella parte inferiore del rame, testo esplicativo in latino inciso su due righe disposte su due colonne . La maggior parte delle lastre, tratte dalle incisioni di Adriaen e Jan Collaert e dai disegni di Maarten de Vos, sono firmate da Thomas de Leu. Alcune tavole sono incise in controparte rispetto all'edizione Cinquecentesca di Sadeler. Buone impressioni con ampi margini, in discrete condizioni di conservazione. Il foglio di titolo della prima parte presenta un'antica nota manoscritta cassata al margine superiore e la data 1606, sempre ms., subito dopo i dati tipografici. Al verso della stessa sono presenti lunghe note ms coeve in francese, così come al verso del f. 12. Qualche macchietta rossa marginale, alcuni piccoli strappetti e un antico restauro al verso di una tavola.Sulla sguardia anteriore antica nota di possesso in francese datata 1750. Thomas de Leu (Parigi, 1555-1612) figlio di un commerciante di stampe a Oudenaarde, iniziò la sua carriera ad Anversa, dove lavorò per Jean Ditmar (c. 1538–1603). Intorno al 1580 si recò a Parigi per lavorare per il pittore e incisore Jean Rabel (1540/50–1603). Prima edizione. Ottimo esemplare (lievi fioriture passsim), a pieni margini. Si tratta dell’edizione originale, estremamente rara, tirata in soli 350 esemplari e diffusa tramite la libreria dell’autore a Ginevra, la Trubner di Londra e la Meijer di Amsterdam. All’occhietto invio autografo e firmato per Johannes Emil Kuntze (1824 - 1894), eminente giurista tedesco con cattedra a Lipsia, studioso del diritto romano e autore di un volume sulla pena di morte pubblicato nello stesso anno («Über die Todesstrafe»). L’autore (1809, o 1807 per altri - 1894) era figlio di un noto libraio, Dominique, il fondatore della Russian Court’s Library in St. Petersburg; e marito della militante socialista-femminista Désirée Veret. Seguace di Owen il Gay già nel 1848 pubblicò il primo e unico numero del periodico Le Communiste , contribuendo alla fondazione dell’Allenza Internazionale per la Democrazia Socialista (divenuta poi proprio nel 1868 Alleanza Internazionale per la Società Socialista, schierata con Bakunin e per questo non ammessa all’A.I.L. di Marx). Personaggio avventuroso e spesso sorprendente l’autore, oltre alle lotte sociali, si dedicò all’editoria con la sua impresa di commercio librario a Ginevra. Bibliofilo esperto il Gay in particolare è noto per la notevole conoscenza della letteratura erotica (cfr. Mathilde Bombart, Libertinage, socialisme et bibliophilie: l’éditeur Jules Gay). Quest’opera, successivamente ripubblicata, uscì durante l’acceso dibattito dentro la struttura dell’Internazionale dei Lavoratori fra socialisti e anarchici, contributo di indiscussa importanza. Ruyer, p. 180 sq. et Servier), le seul à présenter son budget et celui dont le but était la démocratie, sans corruption ni bureaucratie" (Valette, 'Utopies', n°145). "Ce qui distingue avant tout l'utopie des autres ouvrages de théorie politique, c'est que la société idéale y prend corps dans un espace concret, peuplé de personnes que l’on se représente en train de vaquer à leurs tâches quotidiennes" (cf. 'The Commonwealth of Oceana' parut en 1656 à Londres durant la période "républicaine" qui s'étend de l'exécution de Charles Ier à la restauration par son fils Charles II. L'ouvrage est dédié à Oliver Cromwell, bien que celui-ci fit censurer la première version du livre. L'oeuvre, qui demeure un grand oublié dans l'histoire de la philosophie politique en France, est d'une importance fondamentale pour la genèse et l'émergence des régimes représentatifs modernes. Les idées exposées par Harrington ont directement inspiré les constituants de plusieurs états américains et, en France, Sieyès et la Constitution de l'an VIII dont il fut le principal artisan.
